Who's gotten them out? I'm nervous about anesthesia. I know I should be able to do practically anything since I have given birth.. but the thought of being knocked out freaks me out. I wish I would have done this before becoming a mom..
Honestly my wisdom teeth surgery was a piece of cake. Yes I was knocked out but it was so quick and easy I don't remember it. All I remember is going in, and the next thing I was waking up in recovery. As for pain and swelling, I had none. I actually went out the next night with friends. My husband had his out last year when he was 29. He was a little worried since he waited so long but his was the same as mine, quick, easy and painless. I hope the same for you!
It really wasn't awful for me at first. I had all four removed at once. They had me watch a video of what happens (they usually cut away your gum and break the tooth in half to get it out in two pieces so it doesn't hit a nerve).
When I went in, they had me take a valium a few hours before to make sure I was relaxed. I don't remember anything from about 5 minutes after I sat down to about a half hour after they were done. It wasn't scary at all. They assumed I'd be sleeping most of the day, but when I don't feel well, I don't sleep. I was up the rest of the day.
The worst parts? Stop reading if you don't want them.
For the first two hours afterward, I had gauze packing on my gums. It hurt to open my mouth too far, so I had to shove them back to the back with barely a fingertips' width opening in my mouth. Swallowing blood was disgusting. I recommend wetting a green tea bag, chilling it, and then chewing on it. I hate green tea, but it helps stop the bleeding.
My face was numb from my eyebrows to my neck. It wasn't awful, but it was amusing trying to eat applesauce. I thought I was doing well until I went to wipe my mouth and realized I had it all down my chin and several inches of it on my shirt.
Then the worst part...I got dry sockets where all four teeth were. My bone was exposed, and it was super painful. I had to go back in and they soaked strips of paper with numbing medication and shoved it down into the sockets. I had to leave those in for days, and they tasted disgusting. They gave me a syringe to stick into the holes and wash out any food bits that got stuck down in there. If this happens, try not to use cold water on dry sockets. Yeowch.
Honestly, after the first day, I was up and running as normal, and even though I was in pain, it certainly wasn't the worst I've felt. It was manageable, if not ignorable.
When I had my wisdom teeth out, I wasn't put under. I also didn't get any valium. I wish either of those had happened, but... They simply numbed my face up and started. One was a very simple just pull it out, because it had already come through. The other was turned sideways and was cut into three pieces and was removed.
The next week sucked. I went through a prescription of Tylonal with Codiene and two of Vicoden. My dentist was counting pills and figuring out if I was drug-seeking. My DH (then boyfriend) took them from me and would only give them to me when it was time to take them. (He is very concerned about narcotics addictions.) I took my pain meds at the shortest intervals allowed and was still in tears many times. The meds made it bearable, but I sure wasn't happy about it.
On the brighter side...it was years ago. I am not in any pain now and I got through it. Everything is okay...now.
i got mine out without anesthsia....just high doses of novicaine. I wasn't even sedated. I felt nothing. I didn't do well afterwards but that is entirely different story. Make sure you take your pain meds right away after getting them out. I waited a little too long and thought I was going to die. The surgery itself was no problem and I had four impacted in the gum wisdom teeth....like I said no anesthsia or sedation.
I had mine out 6 years ago. I didn't go under, I just had them give me local anesthetic. I have done everything to avoid being knocked out and now I have to have my thyroid removed and I am freaking out about having to go under.
Both Dh and I were just numbed when we got ours out, but I know a lot of people that have been put out. Its really not that bad. The worst part for me was the pain killers they gave me made me carsick. As soon as I got out of the car, I threw up... which hurt like hell since I had to open my mouth farther than I should have.
Some of these posts really scare me. I'm having all of mine taken out in 2 months. I've never been knocked out either and blood and all that scares me to death. Hope yours goes well.
I've been put out for wisdom teeth, appendix removal, and an eye tumor removal. Each was no big deal. It's a little weird, because if you try to stay awake you just can't and it only takes seconds. That said, you wake up a little groggy, but it's not bad. Kind of like waking up with a hangover, without the pain and nausea. And I felt more or less awake and fine after 10 minutes. Try not to worry about the anesthesia; it's very routine and not a bad experience.
I did it a few years ago. I was really nervous too and that was the one and only time I have ever been knocked out but it was quick and of course I don't remember anything, except my mom making fun of me after wards. I was lucky that only one tooth was impacted so the recovery wasn't too bad either. FYI though, be careful with what you try to eat or drink afterwards..my mom picked me up a milkshake and I thought I was eating it but really it was all running down the front of my face but I couldn't feel anything lol.
