If you use a fan to keep the air circulating/reduce SIDS risk

how long will you keep using it? It's getting cold here at night and I haven't turned my heat on yet. DS sleeps in fleece when it's super cold but I still have the fan going. It seems like the fan is making the room twice as cold! WDYT?

Re: If you use a fan to keep the air circulating/reduce SIDS risk

  • I made DH put one in her room.  When she was a week old we asked the pedi about it and he said there was no solid research that proved it reduces SIDS so we never even turn it on.

He said it is good for the noise it makes.

  • We use a fan still, but it's just a little one, and I don't face it directly at her crib. We live in So Cal so it doesn't get too cold here, so I plan on keepin it on for a while longer. Guess that didn't help much...maybe just get a smaller fan, so you still have circulation, but not so much air blowing around?

  • I intend to always leave one in her room for the noise.  I just point it at the wall.

I still have a fan in my own room.

Edited twice because I can't type when I'm tired.

  • Isn't the risk of SIDS pretty much nonexistent after 6 months?

  • We use a ceiling fan on low.  It's getting cold here at night, but we close the door to Jack's room which keeps in heat.  When you turn your heat on you can reverse the direction of the fan and it will force the warm air down and still provide some circulation.

  • Our house tends to be colder in the summer than winter. The fan will stay on all year long. We will reverse the direction of the fans in the winter. We have electric heat and we need the circulation.

This; I keep the fan running in Nellie's room now b/c we live in an apartment complex and the parking lot gets loud w/ cars and engines and whatnot.. So it's good for the white noise effect it has. She's almost 9 months old.

  • if you have a ceiling fan just reverse the direction that way it is not blowing on your LO.  We use fans all year to help circulate the air around our house.

  • We've been turning it off- I didn't know about the direction thing.

Same with us. Plus, ours isn't a ceiling fan and the lowest setting is still super fast.

I thought it began to drop at this time and was close to nonexistent closer to 1 year.

This. We keep it on for the noise and to keep the air circulating. We will have to look into switching the direction. He sleeps in footed sleepers and a blanket and he hasn't been cold yet. MH likes to keep the pellet stove on super high during the winter also - so we will need the circulation.
