Thursday afternoon I noticed that she sounded a little congested - chest not head. Then Friday she started coughing, not a dry cough but like the kind of cough you get at the tail end of a cold, sounds deep and (tmi) phlegmy. She doesn't seem to have anything else though. No fever, she's acting totally fine, eating fine, etc. Not sure what it could be or if requires a call to the pedi. It does wake her up when she's sleeping, but other than that not too bothersome.
Ideas?
Edit: She had a 101.2 fever this afternoon (sunday) so I'm going to keep her home from school tomorrow and take her in to the pedi.

Re: Diagnose my daughter please!
Btw, I hope it gets better soon!
Also, is it worse at night? Or is it the same throughout the day? Because dh seems to think that I "want my house to be an ice castle" and that's why Abraham coughs the most at night and in the mornings.
Hi Leanna! It's hard to give you a diagnosis without the physical component but there are several possibilities for a productive cough alone - there are more possibilties but these are some of the more common... It could range from an upper respiratory tract infection (aka common cold), bronchitis, allergic rhinitis (allergies), pneumonia (hopefully not, she would sound sicker), or reactive airway disease (it's a fancy name for "asthma-like" symptoms without giving the diagnosis of asthma.) Chances are it's nothing serious since you say she is completely fine besides the cough for the last couple of days but of course, letting your pedi know is the best and safest thing.
I know these coughs could be so uncomfortable for the poor kids. About 5 months ago Evan had the common cold but a lingering productive cough nagged him for almost 1 month that was worse at night and when he was exerting himself. I suspected the beginnings of asthma and took him to to the pedi who started him on nebulizer treatments and sent him to the pulmonologist. Surely, he has reactive airways and allergies that can go hand in hand and we have him on maintenance therapy with pulmicort and singulair. He still gets his phlegmy cough once in a while but it is better. The pulmonologist has chosen to not call it asthma at this time.
Can't say this is what Alexis has since she's only had a cough for 2 days but it shows the progression of a cough and how it can be hard to give a particular diagnosis. Hope she gets better really soon and if she's not better I would definitely pay a trip to her pedi to make sure all is well! Keep us posted!
And Clari - hope Abraham gets better soon! His story reminds me a bit of Evan's...cough at night and mornings, 1 month...although Abraham is in daycare now so they do tend to get sick more often.
