Toddlers: 24 Months+

does your 2.5 yr old nap?

My daughter has some days when she naps and then sometimes, like on the weekends we will be out and busy and napping doesn't happen.  For the last 2 days she hasn't napped and she goes to be soooooo much easier!  Normally I can't get her to sleep until 9 or 9:30 (or later sometimes) if she takes a nap.  When she doesn't nap she goes to sleep at 7:30 or 8.  I am really thinking of dropping the nap, she seems ok w/o one.  Things tend to fall apart around dinnertime with or without nap.  when do naps stop?  is it ok to not have a nap around this age?

TIA!

Re: does your 2.5 yr old nap?

  • DD still naps about 2-3 hours every afternoon!  Sometimes if we are out doing stuff we will just skip over it & she does fine for not having one!  I don't plan on dropping her naps anytime soon though.. only because she's such a good sleeper & will still take one!  I'm not really sure when naps stop.. I think it probably depends on the kid!

  • My DD does not nap anymore (hasn't since 23.5 months) and is in bed around 8pm.  She usually sleeps 12-13 hrs. a night and has no problems going to bed.

  • DS2 still sleeps every day for about 1.5 hours.

My DS1 napped most weekends and some days at daycare until he was 3.5-4 y.o.

  • My 2.5 y/o DD still naps on most days - usually 2-3 hours. She also goes to bed at 7pm and wakes at around 6am. I don't see any sign of her dropping the nap yet - if I haven't put her down by 12-ish, she is asking to sleep. It definitely breaks up the day in an inconvenient way (So many places don't open until 10a on the weekend - zoo, children's museum, etc - and many close at 4 or 5 - so it's hard to plan activities when we're off from work). But, the days when she is unable to nap, she is clumsy, whiny, willful, won't eat. Yeah, still needs a nap.
  • It seems like 2.5 may be the start of no naps.  DD sometimes does and sometimes doesn't.  I also don't see a difference with her at night... It actually makes our weekends a bit easier-- i used to stress about getting her home for a nap.  But now if we are out and about I dont worry about it.  Regardless, if she doesn't nap she still has quiet time.  At home it's just laying in our bed usually watching tv.  At school they are required to lay on their cot reading or doing a puzzle for some time.  I need that quiet time from her too!
  • Chelsea stopped napping about two months ago...she went from a 3 hr nap almost every day to nothing. In one week she napped two days and then the following week no naps. She became very resistant, crying and yelling "I'm not tired! I don't want to take a nap!!!" So, we've instituted quiet time. She goes in her room with low lighting, soft music, and the door shut. She is allowed to play or read or lay in bed or whatever she wants as long as she stays in her room and is fairly quiet. She can obviously come out if she needs to go to the bathroom. I set a timer for 2 hours. Most days she stays in there close to that, but I let her come out anytime after one hour if she asks.

Oh, and she goes to bed around 7:30 (about an hour earlier than when she used to nap), and wakes up around 7 or 8 each day.

  • My DD still naps almost every day.  I think typically naps go away between age 3-4 but every kid is different.

  • DD naps usually every day - usually between an hour and three hours. At school, she's usually the first one asleep, and sleeps the whole two hours. She naps later here, but if she doesn't nap, she doesn't sleep as well at night. But she has shortened her night sleeptime length. She gets up around 8 now instead of 9:30.

  • Lily naps about 2 hours a day during the week when she's at DC. On the weekends, she hasn't napped in her bed for about two months. Sometimes she'll take a cat nap in the car, but usually she skips it. For me, it's fine. She doesn't turn into a monster like she used to when she missed a nap, and bedtime is a little easier (she's easy at night either way, typically).

  • DD1 stopped napping at age 3.  DS fights he with everything he has, but he still really needs them.  Honestly, I'd be fine with him giving them up at this age if he weren't such a mess without them.

  • Funny, I could have written this post tonight!

DS always always naps.  But he doesn't go to sleep until 11 most nights (we put him to bed at 9:15 but he stays up that long).  Today for some reason he just skipped his nap.  Totally unlike him.  He was a wreck the whole evening, major meltdowns.  BUT he was asleep by 8:15.  OH my gosh!!  I loved all the free time this gave me and DH.  Definitely considering dropping his nap now...
