Does anyone have experience with using a doula at Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville or with OB-Gyne Associates of Libertyville in particular (Drs. Spellman, Nakanishi, Morrison, and Schaeffer)? I have heard that hospital is not as friendly to mamas wanting a natural birth and want someone there to help me navigate the system and have a positive first-time birth. I am talking to my doctors about what I want, but am worried about being just another birth among the many they attend. Hoping a doula will help me feel more in control over the decisions to be made.
Re: Doula at Condell?
I used OB-Gyne of Libertyville, but didn't use a doula. I kind of wish I had - my birth experience was very traumatic and I was really upset about it for a long time. Dr Nakanishi delivered my DS and was completely detached throughout the whole process. At one point she just left (while I was pushing with no pain meds) and my DH had to go find her - she was in the waiting room talking on her cell phone. It was really disappointing because she was so great while I was pregnant.
I'm not trying to scare you - mostly just recommend that if you do want a natural birth, you should definitely get a doula. It would have made a huuuge difference to me to have someone there focused entirely on me and my baby. Even the nurses there ignored me and were chatting to each other about their weekends. I was in so much pain that I could hardly speak so I really needed someone paying close attention to the few words I did manage to get out (like about when I needed to push). Some of the nurses were awesome, but none of them were on shift when I was pushing. A doula would be a good security measure in case you did get the crappy nurses!
PM me if you have any more questions. Hope you have a happy & healthy pregnancy & birth.
