1st Trimester

Metformin ladies

Just curious... my doc told me to go ahead and stop taking my rx for Metformin.  He says that I needed it to "get" pregnant, not "stay" pregnant.

Anyone else stop taking their Met? It kind of worries me, but I figure he is the doctor and I should trust him.

Re: Metformin ladies

  • I did not have to take it this time, but I did with DD. I stayed on it for my first tri. There is some research that suggests it reduces the risk of miscarriage in people with PCOS. A friend recently got pregnant while on Metformin and I know her doctor is having her stay on it for the entire pregnancy,

  • I would ask the doc about it if you're still concerned - I'm still on my Metformin and my doc wants me to keep taking it for now. I thought it helped reduce the incidence of early miscarriage in pregnancy? But I could have dreamed that or it could only be true in some cases.

  • There are studies that show a lowered risk of 1st tri miscarriages when metformin is continued.  There are also studies that show metformin reduces the risk of gestational diabetes when taken throughout the pregnancy.  https://www.otispregnancy.org/files/metformin.pdf is one of the links I have stored.  If I ever manage to get pregnant again, my OB wants me to stay on my metformin for the entire pregnancy.  Of course, you need to listen to your doctor who knows your body and history, but I would ask again since his "get pregnant not stay pregnant" seems a bit wrong by the studies I've found.

  • Thanks ladies.  I too have heard of those studies.  That is what worries me.  I will call him on Monday just to re-check that he feels comfortable with my not being on it anymore.
  • My doctor says taking it up to your 12th week has been shown to help prevent miscarriage in PCOS women. So with both pregnancies I took it until 12 weeks (with the first) and 10.5 weeks (with the second).

  • i stayed on it for the first tri with dd. and I am staying on it again for first tri.

  • I stopped as soon as I found out that I was pregnant.
  • With previous pregnancies I stayed on it unti 12 weeks, this time I am taking it the entire time and while breastfeeding.
  • Personally, I am staying on it.  I don't want to risk the chance of miscarrying and there is some pretty good evidence that staying on met does help your body maintain the pregnancy.  My midwife just ok'd it for me after checking with one of the docs in the practice.

I am also considering staying on it throughout my pregnancy and for breastfeeding.  I had difficulty maintaining my milk supply last time and I truly think it was because I didn't know I had PCOS and wasn't taking anything to help with the symptoms.   Just food for thought!

  • My doctor and high risk OB both agreed that I should stay on it until 12 weeks, but stop it after that.  I am "weaning" off of it now.
  • I think a lot depends on your doctor. Mine wanted me on it up until I started insulin, but he told me that even if I wasn't having blood sugar issues the benefits out weighted the risks. My pharmacist said the same thing. If you have concerns about it, talk to him!

  • I am on Metformin for PCOS & just saw my doctor last week.  We decided that with my history (3 miscarriages) it made sense for me to stay on it through the first trimester.  Not only do studies show it reduces chance of miscarriage but being on it could give you some piece of mind, something my doctor puts a lot of focus on.
