Eczema --daily lotion that is good

Hi,

My 17 week old daughter has eczema.  When it really flares up, she has a prescription for hydrocortisone that I use, but for a daily lotion I am struggling to find one that seems to help her skin.

We've been using aquaphor, per her pedi, but I really feel that it does nothing to help soothe her "rough" patches.

Can anyone recommend a good lotion that is safe for babies to be used daily and has had some success on keeping eczema skin moist and not rough.

Thanks

  • A great lotion I was told to use by my dermatologist is CeraVe lotion, it also comes in a body wash form too.  Most times I can't find it in the aisle, it'll be behind the counter at the CVS pharmacy just ask a tech and they should be able to get it for you.  It's not cheap but it works really well!

  • Cetaphil cream works well, too.  (I've been told that creams work better than lotions)

  • My LO does not have eczema and I don't have a lotion to request.  But my LO had been wearing Halo Technical Comfort clothing a lot during the summer (for the SPF and body temp regulating properties).  I noticed that it also is approved by the National Eczema Association to reduce itching and irritation caused by eczema and sensitive.  You can get more info and buy it at www.halocomforts.com.

  • We used the aquaphor too and also had a prescription for hydrocortizone and another one for Nystatin when it was really bad. We also tried hydrolatham (spelling?) which is an over the counter cream
  • It took us awhile to find a routine that works for DS, but when he was under a year, we had to only bathe him every 3 days, and slather him head to toe in aquaphor right after bath time (we still do - but he's on every other day baths unless he's super dirty).   Then on top of that we do Cetaphil lotion every morning and night.   For the most part it keeps it away, but this time of year and through the winter he'll get flare ups that sometimes require his Rx.

We've found that denim irritates his skin the most, so days he wears jeans we try to put aquaphor behind his knees and on his waist to provide a little extra protection.

Also, we use California Baby body wash for super sensitive skin in the tub, which has helped as well.

Every kid is different in what works - I can't treat DS's eczema the way I treat my own even.

DD was the same way!  She refused to wear blue jeans for a year.  She would only wear 'comfy' stretch pants, or the fleece lined jeans.  She's now 5, and I'm just noticing the eczema is finally getting under control at the back of her knees.

  • Thanks for the suggestions!

It doesn't seem to bother her, but the backs of her knees are bright red and well, it looks like it would be uncomfortable.
