playing with baby

what did you do with your newborn when he/she was awake? i feel bad because I am not sure how to play with him when he is awake...is he just too young to really interact with? or is there something wrong with me?

Re: playing with baby

  • I didn't really "play" with my baby until around 2 1/2 months.  And even then, it was b/c a friend of ours got him a toy, and I didn't even think to try to get him to play with something earlier than that!  lol.  Don't fret about playing with your baby right now.  They are young - they need food, shelter, and nurturing right now.  That's about it.  :-)

If you really feel like "doing something" - just talk to him, sing to him, dance with him, walk around with him in the sling, etc.  Just him staring at your face is engrossing to him b/c he has never seen one before!  Just know that he is constantly learning already - no matter if you are "doing something" with him or not.

  • There's nothing to do with a 2wk old really. Just talk to them, sing, and smile. That's probably enough. It was a really long time before I felt like either of mine were interactive.

  • There is nothing wrong with you, they just don't do much at this age. Like CareBear said, talk to him, sing to him, hold him close. That is all they really need. They need to know you are there and that they are loved and cared for.

I'm sure you are doing a fantastic job. If it makes you feel better you can look at www.babycenter.com to look up developmental milestones and facts about each week during their first year. I use this site to look up new activities that will suite his new and growing skills.

Ditto this.  Smile at him lots.  I've always heard that smiley moms have smiley babies because they mimic the expressions they see most.
