I read recently that Baby Einstein got in trouble (maybe they were sued? But I'm not sure) because they are not actually educational. I say give her a chance to entertain herself, you might be surprised.
I don't really mind them unless you try to make me watch one of those horrible things. They are SO annoying! But Rowen didn't like them until he was over 2. He liked entertaining himself and never even looked at the TV and would get mad if I tried to sit him in front of it.
Gianna has been watching baby einstein since she was 2 months old!! Only for a 1/2 hour a day and she absolutely loves it...I see nothing wrong with it at all...
Gav likes watching TV. I try to leave it off when he's around, but sometimes I do let him watch it so that I can do laundry or something. I wouldn't waste money on Baby Einstein, though. I don't think it's any better for them than Nick Jr. really.
We usually just put the 'Sprout' channel on for Gavin. In the car he LOVES watching the movie Good Boy. Whenever we get in any car he points to the ceiling and says "puppy!" because he wants to watch it.
I got a couple of the DVDs at my shower. C loves them! At first she just stares and it takes a little nit to get her warmed up but the next thing I know, she's squealing with exitement. I personally don't see anything wrong with something that makes her so happy. I've only put them on for her twice so far, but I'm defintely not against them. I totally agree that they're totally weird and I would never be able to watch the full 30 minutes myself. I joked to DH that they're making millions off of the most low budget creation ever.
I have no problem letting Mari watch one... but that's only because she is basically incapable of entertaining herself. I've tried everything to give her some independent play, but as soon as I move away from her (I'm talking like 2') I get the "mamamamamamamamamama" yell that turns to crying... Unless I'm sitting right with her all the time, she's upset... and Baby Einstein is the only way she'll sit by herself (for like 10 minutes while I speed scrub the tub, usually - that's the only thing I can't do with her in a wrap or in the sling).
Not a fan of baby Einstein per se, but I've come to the point where I don't think it is all that bad. If you look around a bit, you can even find some childrens programming that doesn't make your ears bleed (aka Barney!)
We're big fans of Sesame Street. We also watch Mickey Mouse Club House, Imagination Movers, and Handy Manny. Little Einsteins isn't bad either. I also recommend ChooChoo Soul - but that is more of a music cd. It not an actual show. We saw them live at Sesame Place.
I think the real value of children's programming comes when you watch it together (and if you play the same dvd 10,000 times, even while cleaning, you will eventually see all of it.) I know for me, watching SS, helped remind me of concepts that I need to explain to Lil Miss, such as near and far or over and under. Handy Manny is great for us since DH is always working on something. For him tools are second nature, but seeing them explained in a very basic way gave him a starting point to explain things to Lil Miss. I hope that makes sense.
