Help me - diaper rash

CPK's skin is crazy red and raw in her creases between her groin area and her legs.  This showed up instantly between diaper changes.  She acts like it is pretty painful.

What is the best ointment I can use?  I know I should keep her dry, so should I use disposable diapers instead of cloth for a while?  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Help me - diaper rash

  • Have you tried the Desitin? That has worked great for me in the past. There is even an Aveeno cream I use on my LO's knees from trying to crawl that works great also.

All of my life I have been waiting for all you give to me You

  • when dd has a bad rash, desitin was useless for us---i switched to beaurdeax's butt paste and i swear....one use and it was visably better---two uses and it was nearly gone!!!!!!!!!!!

Just keep her butt really dry if you can--give her some naked time and let everything get air dry for a while.

We were the exact opposite.  Butt Paste was pointless & Desitin (maximum strength) worked wonders for us.  DD's daycare teacher said that she always uses a product w/ 40% zinc oxide.  She's not a doctor by any means, but she has worked w/ babies for the last 40 years.

ETA: If I were you, I'd buy both when you go to the drugstore.  My BFF swears by another brand (I think it's the Lansinoh).  I really think it depends on your baby & his/her hiney.

  • You're going to think I'm nuts but my pedi told me about this...and the diaper rash vanished instantly.  Desenex athlete's foot powder has an active ingredient in it that kills the yeast (the red you see in the diaper rash).  Yeast loves to grow in dark moist places...so the key is to make it as dry as possible.  So put the Desenex on the diaper rash and then put the diaper rash cream over that (we use triple paste). Another thing that we do (after the diaper rash is gone) is to put vasoline on her overnight.  The vasoline will keep the pee/poop from touching her skin overnight and help stop her from getting the diaper rash in the first place.  Hope this helps...

It could be yeast, in which case you need to take her out of CDs and into disposables. treat it with a combo of Lotrimin AF and Desitin (mixed in your hand) and really butter her up. You'd need to bleach your CDs if it is yeast, or they will just reinfect her.

Same here. Our Pedi recc. the Destin max. strength - the purple one. The butt paste didn't do anything for our LO either. We also put a disposable on when we need to put cream on. Usually one time coated heavily overnight and he is cleared up in a disposable. So we put the cloth back on in the morning. I am going to switch detergents though - I think that may be part of the problem for our LO.

  • We use disposables when she is really rashy. I cover her in the Aveeno diaper rash cream and it is almost always cleared up after one or two diaper changes. I would definitely bleach your CD's though, just in case it is yeast.

I think I'll bleach them just in case.

  • Thank you to everyone for help
  • My DD is going though the same thing as we speak. I have an appt on Tues if it doesn't get better. I am pretty sure mine is yeast. I thought though that bleach was really bad for c/d's? How do I do this correctly?

I EBF and a website I was reading said this can happen if you EBF.

bleach isn't great for your CDs but once in a while it won't ruin them. the alternative is yeasty diapers, so ...

to disinfect, start with clean CDs and wash cold/cold with 1/4 bleach, then a lot of hot rinses. you want to do cloth wipes also, if you use them. also keep your LO in disposables for at least a week after the rash is gone.... yeast lingers on the skin and you could find yourself with another rash if you go back to CDs too quickly.

I FF.  We use Flips with prefold inserts, so I would think it would be okay to bleach the inserts.  Is that wrong?

OMG thank you for the instructions! This isn't going to ruin the color is it? I use pocket diapers...mainly BG's but I have some minky diapers too. I completely can see how easy bleaching the inserts would be but I am a little worried or hesitant on the actual shells/ pocket diapers themselves.

no, it is fine, but if I were you I'd bleach everything. it is likely on the Flip covers, too.

the only thing that discolored were my thirsties fab wipes.

  • We use gDiapers - do you think it would be okay to use the disposable inserts for a week or should we go buy a pack of disposables? Thanks!

  • Don't use disposables.  They will make it worse.  The best solution is to give a tea bath (earl grey or black) and then wipe with a facecloth soaked in tea water for every diaper change.  It should clear up within a day.
