What's your opinion on "crossover" SUVs?

I'm going in a few hours to pick up my new/used car. It's a crossover (Ford Freestyle). I'm excited, because we need the space. But part of me feels like I'm getting into a mommy mobile. I wanted a larger SUV, but I have a long commute and don't want to get something with high gas mileage. This one is similar to my current small car. What do you think of cross overs? Are they mommy mobiles? Are they as bad as mini vans (no offense to those who drive mini vans)?

Re: What's your opinion on "crossover" SUVs?

  • I love them.

I drive a mini-van... if I had had a choice though it would have been an SUV.

It's a toyota Sienna, my swag waggon as the commercials would like me to believe.

  • DH and I are waiting until taxes to trade in my Hyundai Elantra for a Hyundai Santa Fe.  It's their mid-sized crossover SUV.  good mpgs and we love our hyundai...they're very reliable!
  • I have a minivan and love it, but my dream is to have an SUV.  A crossover would not be practical for us, though, because we are expecting #2 and plan to have more kids in the relatively near future.  But if life were ideal, there would be some way for me to comfortably fit 3+ kids in a crossover or full-sized SUV!

  • I think mine is considered a cross over... it's a Buick Rendezvous with a fold down third row of seats (which we keep up at all times since my 4 year old has to sit there).

Actually, now I kind of wished I had gotten a mini van.  The Buick was great when it was just two kids but now that there are three it's so tight.  I drove a rental Dodge Grand Caravan when I was having some body work done on my car and it totally changed my view on Mini Van's... it was amazing.

  • We are going to look at crossover SUVs this weekend. It is the largest vehicle class that I am willing to buy. I do not want a monsterous SUV with terrible gas mileage, but I need something a little bigger than my Corolla. I think a crossover is a good compromise. BTW, I have non-mommy friends that drive them.

  • I don't think they are mommy-mobiles like mini-vans but I also don't think they offer much more storage space than a larger sedan.

ETA:  Of course this is coming from someone that drives a tank (Nissan Armada) so a crossover might as well be a mini-Cooper for me.  Hehe.  Enjoy your new car.

  • I drive a 2000 Lexus RS300. I like it! We got an awesome price for it since it was 10 years old, but it runs great and rides really smooth.
