Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Moms of 2+: 2nd crib or move DS to twin bed

I hate the thought of buying another crib. DS is so content in it now I don't want to ruin his sleep habits by moving him to a twin bed. DS will just have turned 2 when his brother arrives. What would/did you do?

Re: Moms of 2+: 2nd crib or move DS to twin bed

  • We chose to move DS#1 to a toddler bed at 18 months when DS#2 was ready for the crib. It was a lot cheaper than a second crib. It only disrupted his sleep patterns for about a week.

  • we're in the same boat. I hate to make him change but I don't want to wait too late. I've heard you shouldn't make major changes 3 month before or after the baby is born. However, ds#2 is big and i'm pretty sure he has passed the height max for our crib. ie if he thought of it he could easily climb out.

  • Our next LO will arrive when ds is 22 months. We bought a new crib for this LO because we aren't ready to move ds out of his crib, we will just convert it to a toddler bed when he is ready.
  • This is what we got DD.  Her crib was recalled, around when she was 18 months or so.  https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3081868

It turns into a full sized bed for when she's bigger.  It also comes with 2 rails instead of just the one that is pictured.  Both of the rails can be taken off.  We kept 2 rails up at first, until she figured out how to climb over it.  It sits very low to the ground, so she didn't get hurt when she climbed over.  We love the bed.  When we first switched, we just didn't think she was ready for a toddler bed, so I love that it came with the railings.

  • DS will be 24 months when this baby arrives.  We are getting a really low twin for him and putting it in his room now to see if he will transition more easily that way.  I'm a little worried about it, but hoping for the best.
  • So we don't actually have two(were going to TCC in May) But I am going to transfer Basil to a daybed next month because she is able to(though, hasn't yet) climb out of her crib if she wants. We are getting this in espresso:

Just a thought, since it's cheaper than a new crib. And I like that it has all the sides like a crib and the rail is almost half the length of the bed. Most toddler beds have rails on the side but a lot of them are so short it wouldn't seem like they would keep the kiddo from falling out.

  • My first 2 are 2 years and 2 weeks apart.  I went for the twin bed.  It worked out great.  My oldest loved her big girl bed.  She was about 20 months when I made the switch.  We started with just the twin mattress on the floor so she wouldn't get hurt while getting use to it.  A few weeks later we bought her a bed.  It didn't have a box spring with that kind of bed so it was a little lower to the ground.
  • I have the same problem, except that DS won't even be 16 months when DS2 is born.  We'll keep the baby in our room in the pack n play bassinet until he STTN, just like we did with DS1, which was about 3 months.  After that, I might just have the baby keep sleeping in the packnplay until DS1 is ready to move out of his crib.

  • I converted DS's crib to a toddler bed a couple months ago (13 months). He will be 20 months when the new baby comes. The first month went great. then he started having some trouble with nap time. He was too excited to get out and tear his room apart instead of sleeping. He goes down with no problem at nighttime. He may be ready to get rid of one of his two naps now. I figured that this may happen that's why I wanted to try it so early so we can HOPEFULLY get past this before the new baby comes.

We are planning to buy him a new twin bed set soon. So hopefully the transition into that shouldn't be too much different. We'll put the baby in the crib. For now I am just putting him in a pnp for naps for a bit.
