Im trying to become a runner...

and it is soooo effing hard! If you're a runner, how long did it take for you to enjoy doing it? How long did it take for you to see a difference in your muscle tone, etc? I am able to run about a mile each night but by the end of that mile I feel like I'm gonna die. So how do I overcome this and get to the point where I can run longer and enjoy it? Thanks for the help ladies!

Re: Im trying to become a runner...

  • I was hooked after my very first run, but mostly because I get hooked on things very easily. Still, I always feel invigorated after a run, even if I'm not as "on" that day. Remember that running doesn't have to ever be one, long, same-paced jaunt without stopping.  Try changing up your speed just to goof around... or run a new route.  The distance will come in time.  It took me a while to want to push myself after I got comfortable with a certain place and pace and it's totally easier to always change things up so that you don't get too comfortable.  In no time you'll be wanting to run farther and farther just to prolong the run! Congrats on what you've already accomplished!!

  • You'll enjoy it knowing that it makes you leaner and healthier. To make yourself feel good!! You have to believe in yourself. The mile will get easier as your body gets use to the strain on your muscles your body isn't use to. Use running as a stress reliever too. Running makes me feel like everything weighing me down has been lifted off my shoulders.

  • You gotta build up your stamina. When I was in HS, I would almost pass our after running a mile.  Now, after running in countless 5ks, 10ks and one half-marathon, I consider myself a runner.  It takes time to build stamina.  Jog an extra mile each week.  Try jogging on a treadmill so you can monitor your speed.  You can start with a slow jog.....like 5 mph and then gradually work your way up. Always keep yourself hydrated before, during and after, too.  And if you haven't, take some vitamins, your body might need them even more when you start working harder.

  • I NEVER thought I would love to run....but after a few months it because my outlet to unwind.

How fast are you running your mile? If you are going too fast, slow down so that the run is more enjoyable. Faster times will come after your body is used to running.

Always stay hydrated to avoid cramping.

  • I have really enjoyed the Couch to 5K program.  It works to build your stamina and even as out of shape as I was when I started, I was able to move up pretty effortlessly.  Once you get through it, they have training programs for 10K and half-marathons.
  • I HATED running in HS and college. I saw it as a necessary evil for sports teams that I was on. I did C25K and by the end of it (9weeks) I could run 3.5 miles and was totally hooked. I finished the program Aug 2009 and have since run 2 marathons, 2 half marathons, and a handful of shorter races. I run 4x/week and love it! GL! If I can love running, anyone can.

  • Just keep going... once you start seeing results, you will start enjoying it more, and as you start enjoying it more you will slowly get faster and build more stamina... it will come, just keep it up.
  • I never thought I would be a runner, but since I started in April 2008 I have run many 5Ks, 5 10Ks and 2 half marathons.  Make sure you pace yourself!  That was my biggest problem.  I was going too fast trying to keep up with my husband, and I got worn out and short of breath fast.  If I keep a slow pace that I'm comfortable with, I feel like I can run for hours.

Make sure you have a good pair of running shoes that are the right fit for your feet.  I went to a running store to find out what type worked bet for my feet because I used to always get shin splints.  Once I got good shoes, they disappeared.  You can always find out what shoes work for your feet, then go online to see if you can get them cheaper.

Also, I wear a Polar heart rate monitor to keep my heart rate in check, that helps me when I'm running outside.  I know that running will be hard if my heart rate is above 170bpm.

Also, make sure you have some great, upbeat music to motivate you throught your workouts.  It make a huge difference for me!  Good Luck, it feels so good when you figure out what works for you!

Another Coach to 5K-er here.  I started out more than 4 years ago, and, I'll be honest, it took me a while before running was something I enjoyed rather than something I had to make myself do.  Signing up for races really helped.  I ran my first marathon last fall, and I am still running (although only 2 miles at a time at this point) pretty late in pregnancy... hoping to go right up until my due date!

  • it is something that takes patience... I never ran in my life on a treadmill, I had to build up to it. It honestly took me prob 2 months of consistant work. I can run for an hour and not get out of breath or tired... it is enjoyable & something i once dreaded i now look forward to! GL :)
