FFFC-Names

This might be flameful...you can flame me, I can take it. I wore my big girl panties today Wink

I don't get when people name their kids with a certain first name, and then call them by their middle name. Why not just use the middle name as the first name then?

I guess I can understand if it's a junior or if you're naming someone after another family member and call the child by their middle name to avoid confusion....but otherwise, I don't get it.

Okay, that's my confession. Thanks for listening Stick out tongue

See, I think that's totally different. I can get where Emmy comes from (I'm guessing the E and M...if I'm wrong you can yell at me Stick out tongue) and Liam is totally acceptable for a NN for William.

I don't think that's weird at all. I think if you were calling your daughter Maudie...that'd be a little weird. BTW, I absolutely love Eleanor Maude, that's a beautiful name. I'd consider it, but my cat already took Eleanor.

  • DS is a IV and we always use a nickname to avoid confusion.

But yeah, I know what you mean.

  • No flames but my brother's name is John Bradley and the entire family calls him Brad.  My mom wanted to name him John after her father but my dad doesn't like the name John so he started calling him Bradley and it stuck. Now, he has a group of friends from school that call him John and his family calls him Brad. In fact, when his friends started calling the house and asking for John they got "Sorry, wrong number" several times by accident until the family got used to it! Ha.

  • I think parents do it just to mess with teachers.

My sister's LO is called "Trey" but he is the third Kevin Francis, so I kind of get that, but still a PITA for him at school.

One of my friend's did this in college!  She went from Mindy to Dee...it was so confusing when her HS friends/parents visited!

  • Amen!  My DH is from South Carolina and this is HUGE down there apparently.  I've questioned this with family and friends from SC.  I've been told they give the child the family name first and then the name they want to call the child for a middle name.  I mentioned that in NY people tend to give them the name they want to call them as their first name and the family name as a middle.  I've actually been told, "that's a really good idea!"  Mmmmkay!
  • I'm Kathie Renee and I go by Renee - DS is Jonathan Robert and he goes by Robert. BUT DS is a junior and my Mom's name is also Kathie Smile

    Haha - I'm from SC
  • Both of my parents go by their middle names. This was intended from the very beginning by both sets of my grandparents. My parents both thought it was a pita growing up, so they made sure to make our first names what they planned on calling us Stick out tongue

On the other hand, we always knew when a telemarketer was calling because of the name they asked for!

Haha. Our last name is hard to pronounce so we could also detect telemarketers. They'd ask for "Mr. Di..De...Du..." By the third attempt we'd laugh and say, "No thanks. We don't want any of whatever you're selling." ;) LOL

  • This ended up biting my sister in the arse when she was pregnant. She named her daughter Leah Avery...and fully intended to call her Avery. When someone came to her and asked her what she was naming her, she always said "Leah Avery". She ended up with sooo much stuff monogrammed with Leah at her baby showers!
  • My DH is is Robert A, and goes by A,  my DS is Robert O and goes by O. DH was named after his grandfather, so we named DS after his greatgrandfather, and father (DH) and the O is DH's father. My DH is adopted and grandfather and father both died when DH was young (5 and 15) so we wanted to honor both their memory and the special bond he had with his family although he was adopted (very important for us). DH has a cousin "Rob" and we are not fond of "Bob/Bobby", so O it is.

I'm in SC and I've never heard of people doing that. Family names are huge in the south, my sons middle name is my MILs maiden name but we don't go by it.
