Moving to Monmouth county/holiday happenings?

We are moving from Vermont to holmdel nj in 1 week. I am starting lo in the little gym on the 25th or 26 th (whatever that weds. is). And will be starting little rockers in their winter or spring session. What else is there to do around the area? With the holidays coming up do they have special things going on in red bank? Haunted woods? Or for Xmas - Santa parades, concerts, etc? I need to stay busy and meet people. Thanks in advance!

Re: Moving to Monmouth county/holiday happenings?

  • i am in basically the same situation as you.  we moved here 2 years ago but because neither of us work in the area we haven't really met anyone or go out around here to often we usually travel to where our families live.  but now with our new son we want to get involved in more local activities.

we did just go apple/pumpkin picking in colts neck and saw tons of signs for haunted woods, corn mazes thing like that. i  guess this year i'll be paying more attention to what is here :)

if you ever want to get together when you move down let me know, our lo is was just born in aug so he is a bit younger than yours but we live right on the border of middletown and holmdel.  good luck with your move!

  • That would be great! I feel like once Los are over 6-8 months there isn't much difference! Have you looked into the little gym in morganville off of 34 or little rockers? It is going to be so hard moving since my sisters and niece and 3 nephews live here in vt but we need to move for job reasons. My hope is to get a job teaching in the fall ( I am certified k-6). We are looking at homes in Middletown, tinton falls, farmingdale Any areas better than others? What should we be looking for?
  • middletown can be tricky when looking for homes there are some really nice sections and some really not so nice sections.  holmdel is really nice with lots of big parks and outside spaces.  tinton falls is a bit more south but still nice. and i'm not to sure about farmingdale, like i said we are still figuring out the area too :)

i just found this meetup and it looks like a ton more moms joined so maybe you will want to check it out too

since our little man is so young i haven't really looked at any gyms yet but probably by christmas we'll be out and about with all those classes.

seriously let me know when you move down this way and if you want we can go exploring the area together!

by the way love the eagles jerseys :) i am a huge philadelphia fan both phillies and eagles!!!

We move down on the 24th and start the little gym class on the 27th. We are going to be living with my in laws in holmdel until our house sells and we can start looking for our own place. My hubs and I are huge eagles fans and he is a huge phillies fan (I'm not to in to baseball). This sounds like a match made in heaven! Where did you move from? My hubs grew up in jersey so he already knows the lay out but I grew up about 1.5 hours away in pa. The next few weeks are going to be an adventure but I think the more I throw myself into things, playgroups, exercise ( I am going to the jazzercise center in wall)' the better! Has it been hard to adjust there and make friends?
  • i'm from cape may (south jersey) and my husband is from emerson (north jersey) we lived in hoboken for a few years and then when we decided to buy we compromised  and picked middletown, right in the middle of jersey :) its been an adjustment meeting people like i said bc neither of us work in the area we usually spend most of our time away visiting our friends in other areas. but now with sammy we want to really set up life here, make some friends closer and get more involved.  adjusting to life here hasn't been to hard we both really like the area. sounds like you have found some great activities for your lo and you! i can't wait to our little man is a few more months so we can go do all that too. i know there is a gymboree class in red bank and i think there is a coupon online so you can try a class for free.  you seem pretty outgoing so i don't think you'll have a hard time at all making friends in down here the people seem pretty nice.  hope the move goes well and let me know when you are in the area and what you think of it all :)
  • Butting in ladies :-)

I grew up in Belford/Middletown and now live in Hazlet so I can let you in on some things.  Seasonal stuff to do: Casollo's (sp?) farms is the most widely known for pumpkin picking and hay rides.  Holmdel Park is always a nice place to visit too.  It is obviously a park - a LARGE one with walking/running paths and playgrounds and there is a farm on site that you can walk through and see the animals and even pet and be apart of the farming experience.  PNC Bank arts Center also does holiday lights (however, I work there during the summer and they were unsure if they were going to do it this year or not) but if they do, it's a nice drive through.

Also, when I noticed you said you were going to look for a teaching job come next fall.  When you start applying places, let me know where because some schools are notorious for not giving tenure and March/April is the best time to start looking for openings.

Any other questions feel free to PM me or ask away!

  • i totally forgot about the park! sammy and i go there everyday for some fresh air and to walk around the trails. thanks so much for the other ideas, i'm really hoping pnc does the lights this xmas i've missed them every year we've lived here and really looking forward to it this year :)
  • Allaire State Park does a haunted woods/hayride type thing. And thats only about 20 mins from Holmdel. I just started living down here about a year ago. I'm in Howell.

  • i think great adventure used to do a holiday light thing, but i'm not sure if they still do. casola farms is def something good for fall activities. also check out atlantic farms in wall twp (exit 98, only about 20-30 min depending on where in middletown), they have hayrides & a petting zoo. in march, belmar (also exit 98) has a huge st pats day parade, usually the first sunday in march. that's a lot of fun for kids & grownups. when the weather gets a bit warmer you should also check out the popcorn park zoo, cape may zoo, and turtleback zoo. keep an eye on app.com (the local newspaper) for different local events. a lot of towns in the area have special events where santa will appear and they usually post it on the website. welcome to the best county in the best state! :)

  • hey guys!!! im in keyport, we love casola farm !!! we went there this past weekend...if you check out holmdel park  as mentioned above they have a living farm that caters for holiday.. its really nice... haunted house for adults they have one in my town, i know oct 30 in asbury park they have a annual zombie walk ..i use to do stroller strides at holmdel park too(cant now bakin twins).. in the summer we go to dorbrook park its a great sprinkler park for lil ones.. as for christmas .. idk .. my town has a santa that stops by and give parents we just call the fire dept to sched a meeting ..... there a jump u in malbaro(sp) it has a open play for the lil ones every morning ..
