Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When to switch to every 4 hour feeds?

My twins are just over 4 months and they take 5 bottles a day- at 6:30, 10, 1, 4, and 7.  I am just wondering when they transition to every 4 hours though and also do you work on making that happen or did the babies just do it on their own?

 Thanks!

  • DD is nearly 5 months old and is very far from this. I feed on demand. When I nurse, DD eats every 2-3 hours (except for at night, when she STTN). When she takes bottles of expressed BM, she eats about every 2 hours. Our nanny has tried giving her bigger bottles at a time, but she won't finish them.

  • We switched to every four hours when our son was consistently eating a four ounce bottle. Then we upped the bottle to six ounces every four hours. you may want to add thirty minutes a day just to make sure. So instead of feeing at 10 you feed at 10:30, 1:30, 4:30, 7:30 etc. Of course if our son is extra fussy, I don't hesitate to feed him.
  • SevenYears - that is very interesting, thanks for the info.  Actually my son takes 6 oz in his bottle, every 3 hours for a total of 30oz a day.  My daughter even takes 5oz every 3 hours, for a total of 25 oz (and she usually takes an additional oz or 2 somewhere along the way).  Am I feeding them too much??  In any event, I just sense that they could both easily go to every 4 hours but I don't think they'd get as much milk then, which sort of worries me b/c I am am scared they'll wake up at night.  Hmmm...  will have to research this a bit- thanks for your info!
  • *Anna7602* - I'm glad to hear that we're not alone. We do the exact same thing you do. I guess they just take their time getting to 3 hours between feedings. I think it's still a comforting thing for my DD and she ousually falls asleep nursing.
