We had our appt with the urologist today and DH has a bad varicocele on the left...
Good news is they want to fix it and they gave him a 60% chance of improving his count. Bad news is its surgery, which is nerve wracking AND it is another delay in trying with no guarantee that it will fix the problem. Also, if we want to put me on his insurance to get IF coverage we have to decide my March, and we may not know by then if it worked. I don't want to waste the 5 grand to go on his insurance if we don't need it, but I also don't want to wait another year to do IVF if his count doesn't improve.
Urgh.... FUIF.
Re: Bad news, good news???
I can only speak from our experience but DH had a double varicocele and had it repaired and since his morph (which was the only thing that was low before the surgery) has been completely normal. And his counts and motility, which were not low to begin with, even improved.
Our results seem to be the exception, rather than the norm, but for us, it was very much worth it.

Madelyn, thanks for sharing your experience. I just don't know what to do at this point...
Dx PCOS 2003/high fasting insulin/clotting issues DH Dx with low sperm count, motility and morphology. Varicocele repair (11/1/2010)
2/2011 - Confirmed no improvement - On to Donor Sperm
4 failed IUIs in 2010
IUI#5 and 6- with DS, BFN
Final IUI - Lucky #7! IUI with DS - 20.Jun.2011 - 21.5 mil motile! Not so lucky - BFFN and the end of our IF journey....
Waiting for our family to be complete through Adoption - May 2012 - Hoping our baby finds us soon!
that's a tough decision cutie
the surgery can lead to improvement but for many it takes a long while to see a change and there's also the chance DH can go through surgery and not see any change.
i guess it depends on how long you want to put off treatment and your issue with insurance.
will improvement be enough that you could potentially conceive w/o any treatment or would you need IUI's?

I know I am kinda late to this post, but my husband just had his surgery last thursday. DH had a grade 3 varicocele and was compeletly devasted, while I seen it as an answer. We had his appointment on a wednesday and the following thursday he had his surgery, which was awesome because it took 2 months to see him for his first visit. The surgery took 1 1/2 hours and went back to work on monday. DH also has low hormones and just started taking clomid. I am very hopeful that this will work and that we will not need the f/u SA in 4 months
