Infant carseat - what age did you stop using?

My son is almost 6 months and is starting to hate his Snap and Go.  He seems to fit into it fine (I've checked the straps a number of times, they are adjusted properly, etc), but do you think six months is too old for him to be in an infant carrier?

I'm asking because it makes daycare drop off in the morning really easy - so I'm hesitant to give it up!!

At what age did you stop using an infant carrier?

Re: Infant carseat - what age did you stop using?

  • With my oldest, we didn't switch until he was 8 months (and man was he heavy in that thing!). With my youngest, he's still in it (at 7 months) b/c of drop-off in the a.m. - they prefer the babies to be in their carseats because early on there are mobile, older kids in with the babies until more teachers come in.

However, we may look to switch within the next month, because he is getting so long for the seat.

  • When he was 6 months. He was already 20 pounds and it was getting way too hard to carry him. It was actually really freeing to not have to lug the infant seat around any more.

  • I didn't switch DD until she was ~9 months old. She's small and it was easier for drop off and running errands. She was starting to look smooshed.

  • We had the keyfit 30, so we used it for a long time--close to a year, I think.  I stopped taking it out of the car and carrying him around in it after a while because it got pretty heavy, though.

  • I think DS was 8 months when we stopped.. he has always been in the 90% for Height and Weight so he was HEAVY in that thing and his legs were like too long for it too being backwards..

I put him in the big boy carseat and faced it forward when he was 8 months..

  • DD is still in her infant car seat. She's such a peanut though & is still well within the weight & height limits. We don't take it out of the base anymore to take her places or anything. We've tried to use her convertible car seat, but she just seems so much more comfortable in the infant seat. It doesn't really matter to me anyway since we plan on keeping her RF for as long as we can.

  • 6 months-DS is a really tall baby and had reached the height limit by that point.

I don't think 6 months is too old, assuming the baby is under the weight/height requirements for the carseat. I would still be using it if it were possible.

  • We switched at 11 months to the convertible, when he reached the height limit for the infant carrier. I missed the carrier, but I think DS liked getting to sit up more and see out of the back window.

  • Yup. I just about flipped when I read that comment too.

  • We used the infant carrier seat (keyfit 30) till around 8 months in DH's car and 11 months in my car. DH does the drop off/pickup most of the time, so once we had the convertible in DH's car, we just left the carrier in my car all the time as backup.

If you do the dropoff/pickup, just leave the seat in the car.

And THANK YOU flyer. I was shocked when i read that as well.

DS will be 2 in Dec and still RF. I'm thinking about turning him around 2, but i probably will keep him as long as his weight limit will allow on his seat.

  • Griffin and Gibson both were out of it by 4 months b/c they were both huge... Grayson stayed in it until 12mo - he's smaller and did fine in it - and it was so much easier for me to have one of the twins in that seat as long as possible. he JUST hit the weight limit at 12mo.
  • With #1, we kept him in the infant seat until he was a year, at which point we just switched to forward facing. He wasn't that heavy and I think most infant carriers do not have an actual height limit, it's about how far the head is from the top of the seat (per my pediatrician).

Anyway, with #2, he was out of the infant seat by 5 months because he was huge, so we put him in a convertible seat rear facing.

  • You go by the weight limit on the infant carseat. The height is also a factor because a carseat can't do it's job of protecting a baby if the top of his head or feet are sticking out of it. It might be time to move him to a larger carseat.

We switched DD out of the infant seat (into a rear-facing convertible seat) at 10 months of age. DS is 8 months and still in the infant seat.

I could not let this comment go:

This is against the law. Babies must be at least 20 lbs AND 1 year of age in order to face forward in a car seat. If they outgrow the infant seat before they meet BOTH criteria, you MUST put them in a rear-facing convertible seat until AT LEAST their first birthday AND 20 lbs. And the AAP now recommends that toddlers rear-face until at least age 2: https://tinyurl.com/cfupql

It's a common misconception that you have to turn babies forward-facing when their legs touch the back of the car's seat, but that is NOT TRUE. Babies are perfectly comfortable seated with their legs bent. And in an accident, better broken legs than a broken neck.

Please please please, I see you're pregnant again... don't flip your new
baby forward facing so soon. It could save his/her life in an accident.

It may be against the law where YOU live, but you're only making assumptions it's against the law where she lives.

  • Bahahhaaha I just got SO confused b/c there is someone responding on this thread who I swore left TB a long time ago when everyone was making those offboards when the format changed or whatever and I was like, ????. But then I saw the Oct 2010 date...
  • @Weezy56‌ I think you're confusing law with recommendation. It's not illegal in the state where I reside.

Fair enough, but why someone would choose to FF at 8 months despite proof that it's dangerous is beyond me. When it comes to a child's safety, the laws of physics trump state law every time.

  • We stopped at 6 months. I never carried it in anywhere except daycare anymore anyway, and they didn't really love having to keep it (very small center), so I switched to a convertible and we parked the infant carrier in DH's car for another 5 months. DS wouldn't have outgrown it until after a year, otherwise.
  • 5 months

after 1 month of daycare, it become easier to carry DD by herself than with the added weight and bulk of her car seat.

  • We used the infant carrier seat until 9 months (which is when DD started walking because she is apparently the athletic one in the family - both DH and I were late walkers) then switched to the rear facing convertible seat. I did stop carrying her around in the seat closer to 6 months though, just because she got heavy.  Not all infant carrier seats are the same - a bunch of them have pretty low height/weight restrictions and babies grow out of them fast. DD was in the 70% percentile for h/w and did not technically out grow her carrier seat (Safety 1st Onboard) until she was over a year old, but with her walking, it was just silly to keep that seat. We kept her rear facing until 24 months and then only turned her FF because she was getting carsick.
  • We switched around 7 months---DS was such a heavy kid and carrying it around became difficult often at times. I did miss that when he was sleeping---we could just let him stay sleeping when I would run errands in the inside of the shopping cart or out to eat. But I was killing my back carrying that thing!

We rearfaced once we moved out of the infant carrier.

  • Both my boys used it to 15 months.  My girls are 10 months and nowhere near being out of them.  As long as they are withing the height/weight limit it is safer for them.  But I'm also the weirdo that RF til they are at least 3.

  • We switched to the convertible somewhere around 8 months.  DD was nowhere near grown out of it, but she didn't like it, and we didn't like carrying it.

DD was rear-facing in the convertible until 25 months - it took until then for her to reach the 20 pound minimum for front-facing.  She loves front-facing, and its a lot easier to get her in and out.

msditz00  Where is the data that the infant seat is safer than a properly installed, RF convertible seat?

I had never heard that one before.

(Rear-facing, yes, but infant seat vs. convertible? No).
You're absolutely right theresat858.  Rear facing only seats and convertible seats are equally safe as long as they're used correctly :)
