I got a P&P (used, $40ish) and it had no stains or anything, looks in great shape and GN so I can use it for Baby J (godson) and for when I have kids. I had it stored away and got it out today.
The mattress how appears to have urine stains, but has no odor. I can only assume that the urine is from the baby that used it previously, or else my own cats may have "marked" it. The thing is, it is dry and doesn't stink at all like cat urine usually does...
Called Graco and they told me to only surface wash the mattress or else it will become unusable since it has particle board under the pad. They also said I could buy a new mattress for it for $21 plus S&H.
So, I can't decide what I should do. Do you think that it will be safe to use if I just surface wash it? My gut tells me no (but then I am the kind of person that doesn't buy used dipes either, maybe too cautious), but then I looked to buy a Naturepedic mattress for the P&P and that costs about $140... kind of high. One reason I liked the used P&P was that it has already off gassed.
I can buy the Graco mattress but then there is the toxicity issue.
What ideas to you guys have for cleaning the mattress that I have already?
And would you buy a new mattress from Graco or Naturepedic?
Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated...
Re: Need advice about P&P and urine *long-ish*
Are they just yellowed stains that weren't there before? If so, it might be spit up. It does that over time.
I'd try surface cleaning it with a pate of Oxyclean/water.
Big E (6) & Little E (2.5)
Here are the options I'd consider:
- surface clean with soap water & TTO, put slightly damp in the sun to sun out anything.
- Find/make a mattress cover for it - the same as the sheets, but out of a real waterproof mattress cover - something with a real barrier. I'd do this in addition to option 1.
- buy the new graco one, air it out a bit before anyone uses it. No way would I put $140 into a new mattress for it. You don't use them enough to warrant that, in my experience & opinion.
The likelihood is that most of the used P&P mattresses out there have either been peed on or spit up on. We've had to spot clean ours over the last 2 years.
I'm pretty sure, at this point, there is nothing in my house that hasn't been peed on and/or spit up on. lol
We bought the Chicco PNP because you can take out the particle board slats to wash the mattress. We've needed to do that a few times.
First, I would just surface clean and get a cover like pp suggested. Like Dobie said, there is nothing in a house with kids that hasn't been peed, puked, or pooped on!
That said, before thinking about it, I soaked our P&P mattress with the hose after my mother's kitten peed on it. I squeezed out as much liquid as possible and left it out in the sun to dry. It was completely dry in a few hours and we haven't had any problems with it.
