City Mini vs. City Elite

I'm in love with the Baby Joggers for a stroller.  I anticipate taking excercise walks (not runs, but brisk walks) with the stroller, and I can't tell if the Citi Mini would work on a trail (like the Sligo unpaved portion) or if I should go with the Citi Elite.

Please share about which stroller you have for taking brisk walks.  I'm open to brands other than the Baby Joggers, I just love how easy and compact it collapses.

Re: City Mini vs. City Elite

  • We have the Mini.  We don't do a whole lot of serious walking with it, but when we've "offroaded" through bumpy (from lots of tree-roots) grass in parks or whatever it's done fine.

  • I've never used the Elite, but we love the City Mini. We use it for exactly that - brisk walks - all the time and it handles beautifully (I can't believe I just wrote that about a stroller Confused We've taken it "off road" a little bit - last year we did a corn maze with it! And there is a little unpaved section of path that we use to go to the park that it does okay on.

It doesn't seem to handle really choppy ground (like with random stones, sticks) well, but I don't know if most other strollers do.

    The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

  • I love taking walks and use our Mini all the time. I can't compare to the Elite as I have never used it, but I am very happy with our Mini. I constantly tell people it is one of my top three baby purchases/gifts!

  • If you haven't already, I recommend going to the store and picking both up with 1 hand. The Mini is a lot lighter and easier to lift in and out of a car. If we had gotten the Elite, I think we would have ended up getting a second everyday stroller for the car. The Elite is also bulkier. A friend has the Uppababy, which I think is a similar size as the Elite, and she got a Snap and Go, because the Uppababy is hard to fit through most doorways (but great for city and trail walking).
  • I have the Elite which we use for our long walks. We keep it in our utility room at all times and only use it from home. I like it for our purposes but it is big and heavy. It's not something that you want to be getting in and out of the car on a regular basis. We took it to the pumpkin patch last week and it barely fits in DH's trunk (Nissan Maxima).

Given that the places we walk are paved, we probably could've done with the mini which is a bit more versatile. My thought is that you probably don't need an Elite unless you are actually running with it or unless you plan to do what we do and just pretty much keep it at your house and not take it in the car.

  • Have you considered the BOB Revolution? I love ours and use it for walking/jogging several times a week.

  • We have a City Mini and a BOB Revolution (my H runs and ended up wanting a jogging stroller so he could take DS with him).  The City Mini is a great stoller, handles bumps well, etc. but I wish the seat and back had more support because the baby tends to slide down. I will say that when I take walks around the neighbor hood, I tend to take the BOB because it is that much easier to push and turn and has a more comfortable handle since it's wider than the CM.  However, it's heavy, bulky, etc. and we don't pack it in the car typically.  The BOB handles unpaved terrain much better for sure, but the CM is still better than a regular stroller.  The back wheel base on the CM is a little wider than many regular strollers though, which I really only find problematic trying to navigate smaller stores.

I also won a MacLaren Volo (very lightweight umbrella stroller - I love it), which I keep in my trunk for quicker in and out stuff (my son's a runner and a grabber and refuses to hold my hand most of the time when I need him to).

So, if you get the Elite (or Bob for that matter), you will definitely want something like an umbrella stroller or lighter/more compact/quick to fold for everyday. But if you get the CM, it will do the job,but you will sacrifice a little on performance for off-roading.  (FWIW, if you get the CM, definitely get the belly bar that's sold separately so your child can lean forward to see out when you are using it for everyday stuff).

Something else to think about that Idon't know the answer to is how long you want to be able to use it to take walks/exercise and what the weight limit is.

  • we have the City Mini and a BOB Revolution and the BOB definitely handles better on trails. The Mini is great for walking the neighborhood but if it is a longer, brisker walk- I take the BOB.

However, now DD refuses to sit in a stroller so they are both collecting dust :-(

I think I recall from another bump board this is being addressed for the 2011 models - an insert is going to be automatically included to help with the sliding issue, thus the price is going up about $10-$20. And I think if you have a 2010 or older there is an insert you can purchase from the manufacturer directly to use.

  • We have the Elite and love it!  The Elite is pretty big for indoors but it is awesome outside.
