Who guilts a pregnant lady about using the elevator?

Some people are just special...that's all there is to it. One of my CWs (who's not known for his sensitivity or tact) saw me stepping into the elevator at work today to go from the first floor to the second floor of our two-story building, and he gives me the side-eye and says to me, "Ohhh, so you're taking the elevator now, huh, not using the stairs?" I told him, "Yeah my doctor told me to take it easy." And he persists, "Well, I'm taking the stairs for the exercise."

Let me caveat this by saying that I don't believe being pregnant makes you instantly disabled. I ran several days a week, took the stairs, lifted things and did everything normal, until I had some problems at 28 weeks and the doctors ordered me to reduce my activity. But my medical issues are not my CW's business. The bottom line is he knows I'm pregnant and I think I should get the benefit of the doubt on whether the stairs or the elevator are most appropriate for me at 32 weeks pregnant. I mean, geez, do I have to be literally pushing this baby out my vag before people lighten up on me a little? I'm not superwoman.

Ok, rant over! Anyone making you feel guilty about taking it a little easier now that we're all heavily pregnant?

  • I'm kind of getting the opposite treatment at work. Ever since I announced my pregnancy around 13 weeks people treat me like I'm fragile and going to break if I move a chair or something. I think too much of either end of the spectrum is just annoying.

  • To answer the question in your subject line... Only a douchebag would guilt a pregnant lady about using the elevator.  Seriously??  Yes, we should definitely be given the benefit of the doubt!  I mean, the doctor's haven't said anything about reducing my activity, but I've noticed it takes me a lot more effort to do little things like get out of bed or walk up the stairs at my house, so I try not to push myself.

Sorry that some d-bag is judging you.

  • That is rotten! I have to say it is annoying when people just assume you can do everything as normal.

I have been having the opposite problem though. All my friends and close family are paranoid that I am going to over exert myself. This exclude my husband because he saw how much I did daily before I was pregnant and of course always carries stuff when he's around, but knows I am not going to over do it. :)

  • What a douche.  I'd probably use that as my excuse to never give him the benefit of the doubt again and feel free to not limit my own use of the side-eye when he makes future tactless comments.
  • I'm another one who has gotten the ooposite treatment. Everyone seems to think I can't judge what I am comfortable doing and they don't want me picking anything up. One of my teachers will mention they need a new keyboard and then ask if I need a student to come help me. Um... I can lift a computer keyboard on my own just fine. I've also been able to keep up with my workout routine (just at lower levels of intensity) and my colleagues are always concerned when they hear me mention that I'm on my way to the gym after work.

  • I have to agree with PP's...people are way too overconcerned!  I carried down 6 books in a cardboard box to someone downstairs, and he freaked!  I was like, um...it weighs maybe 5 lbs.  I think I'll be ok.

  • Your coworker is an a$$hole. Wait for him to take a shortcut and then call him out on it.

  • Only a total douchenozzle says something like that.  Next time, let him know that when he starts carrying around 30lbs strapped to his chest all day, every day, he can talk to you about exercise.

  • What an ass!! I get so panting-out of breath going up a couple stairs in my house! Next time say "well I'm just listening to my doctor!!" People are ridiculous.

  • I do agree that either end of the spectrum is annoying. I guess it's all part of the larger issue that people don't trust pregnant women to use their own judgment to protect their and their baby's health.

I guess it's extra irksome because for months I've been really fierce about making life as normal as possible and not playing the pregnancy card, so it's extra annoying to be picked on for the tiny little adjustments I'm having to make now.

  • Just wait until this guy has a pregnant SO (if it's possible for him to achieve that, being such an a$$), then he'll probably be begging her to take it easy...

Oh no, this guy's old enough to know better; probably in his mid to late fifties with grown kids who are close to my age. Douche-iness knows no age limits, I suppose! LOL

This drives me crazy.  What an a$$hat.  I hope the next time he opens his trap, you have a sassy response that will make him think twice before being a judgmental idiot.
