2nd Trimester

Bottle Warmers

I plan to pump in addition to breast feeding so added a bottle warmer to my registry. One of my friends looked at my registry and told me that they had been told by a OB not to use a bottle warmer with BM. I have never, in my life, heard that before...I know you're not supposed to heat BM up in the microwave because it loses it's important vitamins but a bottle warmer? It's warm water..

Has anyone else heard this?

(I edited this question a minute ago to delete some information that wasn't relevant to what I was asking...)

Re: Bottle Warmers

  • I used to work in an infant room at a daycare and used a bottle warmer for BM. I don't see a problem with it.

  • I would think a bottle warmer would be fine.

And I would take the advice of a pedi over the advice of an OB. But. I don't BF.

However, I know some ladies who do...

This is a test. This is only a test.
  • Hmmm.  I don't know if you aren't supposed to use it.  I never found it necessary.

If I pump, it goes in a storage bag.  I just plop the bag in a bowl of warm water.  I also used drop-ins and I don't know about those going in the warmer.

Warming up a bag of BM in warm water takes, like, zero time.

This. Go buy diapers instead of a bottle warmer...it's amazing what you DON'T use on your registry. Feel free to ask us what you will actually need when the baby comes.

  • Use the bottle warmer.  That's crazy talk.
  • I've always just warmed up the milk on the stove top on low.

I don't know about a bottle warmer or not. Unless it is too warm I don't see an issue?

I would welcome any input...There is SO much out there and it seems like everywhere you turn they're telling you that you need something else....I would benefit from an experienced mom helping! :)

  • Like PP said BM warms up super fast I use to just run my bags under the hot tap water and tada. Bottle warmer is a waste of time and space on your counter top.
  • My kid refuses to take a bottle so not to much help in the warming milk department BUT Kellymom.com is the best site EVER for nursing moms it seriously was like my little bible. Bookmark it. HTH

  • Some are ok, some aren't.  You need to read the warmer.

For what it's worth, we got one and I never use it.  When I pump, I store the milk in the freezer bags, which you can't use in the warmer.  During the day we always just warm up a cup of water and drop the bags in there.  At night, I just feed him.  It's so much faster to grab him and stick him on rather than waiting for myself or DH to heat up a bottle.  GL

My LC said the same thing about bottle warmers.  I have just always used a cup of warm water to heat up a bottle.

Feel free to ask anytime! A tip: I would recommend asking on 6-9 or 9-12 since the ladies there have had a chance to use and abuse the products they registered for.

Also, try and stay away from a "What should I register for? Can you give me a list?" because that's exhausting. (Just being honest!)

But, if you ever want to know if we used a certain item or which product is better, pop on in! We like to give advice but unsolicited advice is usually frowned upon on TB.  Wink

  • I will say that I know someone that has been using a bottle warmer with BM for 5 months and no one's died.

I will also say that same person has been using a pack n play with no intention of buying a crib for 5 months, and no one's died.

    Sooooooo

Do what you want, I guess.

I would certainly hope not. Wink

For the record, I don't agree that using a warmer is a bad idea...was just wondering if anyone else had heard that it was a bad idea.

I couldn't have said it better myself..well done saucy..well done..

  • I breastfed for 6 months and never needed one. Like PP said breastmilk thaws out quickly if you run it under warm water or put it in a cup. I never gave Matthew warm milk because I was concerned about being out and not having access to something to warm the milk. I always gave him a bottle at room tempature. Now that I am giving him formula I still haven't needed a warmer. He takes the bottles at room tempature too.

My honest opinion is to wait until the baby is born. Mostly because you never know what bottle brand the baby will like. I registered for Avent brand and he hated the nipples. I ended up buying every brand of bottles along with every nipple style they made. Insane amounts of money wasted only to discover he liked the gerber bottles sold at wal-mart. Three bottles for $2.98. Also if the warmers are like everything else you can only use it with the bottles that belong to that brand. That was something I learned the hard way

  • Bottle warmers are pefectly fine for breastmilk.

I will be the lone dissenter on the ease of a bottle warmer.  We got a used one from my sister.  You can find them cheap at garage sales/CL or from people that never used it, or a fancy one is pretty cheap.

It takes less water and the same amount of time as using warm water and a cup.  No you can't put a milk bag in the warmer, but you also can't feed a baby from the milk bag so at some point it has to go into a bottle.  Plus a bottle warmer can also heat up baby food when the time comes.

My husband also preferred the bottle warmer.  He felt more secure that the milk was the right temp.  He was very leary of the warm water method.  So you might get a little input from your spouse.

  • Going to go ahead and be on the "pro-warmer" team. I pumped and then bottle fed. I believe mine was the Safety 1st one- it could take any bottle and said specifically it could warm breastmilk (there's a certain amount of water you need to use- and no more).

DD was a preemie and we were feeding every two hours- we put a bar fridge in our bedroom along with a bottle warmer so we wouldn't need to go back up and down the stairs in the middle of the night. As she got older it also warms baby food jars, so we would take it when we went camping, to hotels without microwaves, etc. I think I got mine on sale for about 10 dollars and I honestly think it was a good purchase.

  • I just think they're unnecessary.  It doesn't take that long to heat up a bottle in a container of hot water.  Plus, if you're bfing and it's going well, bottles are PITA.  It doesn't seem worth it to get one if your LO only takes one bottle a day or so.
  • we had an avent bottle warmer given to us and it took 3x longer to heat up bmilk than if we just put it in warm/hot water.

Also when DD was using bottles (after I weaned her) as soon as they see the bottle come out, even empty, they start to go crazy knowing food is coming and they don't know the word or concept of wait! You find a way to heat it up asap!
