Anyone use a PNP as a crib without buying a crib

We are moving into a 2 bedroom apartment at the end of the month.  LO is sleeping in a PNP right now.  We are trying to decide if we should buy a crib for him, or just let him sleep in the PNP until it is time to transition to a toddler bed.

We will buy nice furniture for his room once he is in a regular size bed (I want to have him in a double or queen bed with matching furniture.

Has anyone skipped buying a crib and just used the PNP until about the age of 2?

  • At the rate we are going, Gwen will NEVER get a bed! We are waiting for Nolan to get in to the twin to give Lincoln his crib, and give Linc's crib to Gwen.

  • Brady slept in the PNP until last month and he is almost 11 months old. I think Tina's girls slept in PNP after her cribs were recalled. I think it is fine. Some people thing they are too hard for them but my take is it is safe for the baby and they sleep there so it is fine

  • Have you thought about a convertable crib? We bought a Munire for dd and matching furniture. All of the dressers, etc are adult-sized, so she will be able to use it for a long time. Her crib converts to a toddler bed and then a full-sized bed. I'm soglad we went with the set that we did, so we don't have to worry about what to do with the crib, toddler bed and child-sized furniture when she outgrows it!

  • I've *heard* (just on these boards -- no proof to back it up) that PNPs aren't meant for long-term because the mattress is not supportive enough.  Another option, if you don't want to spend a lot, is a Gulliver crib from Ikea ($99).  We got them for the twins, and we LOVE them.  They don't take up any more space than our PNPs, they are sturdy, got great ratings, and are very simple and stream-lined.  They also convert to toddler beds.  But, you'd have to get a crib mattress as well, which would be another expense.

  • I think if it works for you it is fine.  I'm not aware of any safety reason they can't use it all the time.

With that said, Garrison never slept a minute in her pnp.  I wish I had never gotten it.  We used it as a changing table downstairs and then MIL used it to put her in when she had to go to the bathroom or something but other wise, it was a huge waste.  Basically it is just pressboard under the "mattress" and I think it was way too hard for G.  Maybe she's a diva ; )

We ended up buying a Baby Bjorn travel crib which I LOVE. Super easy to actually travel with (the pnp was a beast!) and SUPER easy to set up and break down-- plus it is much more comfortable.  It is supposed to work until 3 years old....though I don't see that happening for us.  But still well worth the money to us.  It's my 2nd favorite baby purchase behind our UppaVista.

  • If I remember correctly Graco put out a message that their pnp's weren't meant for night time sleeping. Only supervised naps. I can't find that right now though. There was a girl on the boards whose baby supposedly almost suffocated against the side of the pnp. I thought at the time that it's ridiculous to put out a product like that and then say they're not for sleeping.

Also, sleeping that low to the ground, it might be kind of drafty and it's a little difficult to lay a baby down asleep that far down. (although I'm short so...)

I agree that the ikea or a mini crib might be a nice option. I know Ana is way too long for a pnp right now at 10mos already.

  • Thanks...my dad was suggesting that we skip the crib and continue to use the PNP.  I want to get the crib-still thinking the IKEA one especially if the mattress fits.

I don't want to go with a convertible crib b/c I want matching furniture and we cannot afford the expense of the crib/furniture right now.
