Stretch mark prevention, Any tips?

I am 19 weeks and have been trying to use regular coca butter lotion. Last night I got Palmers Tummy Butter. It's a pain to apply, but it feels good! Any suggestions what helps prevent those horrid stretch marks?

  • It's mostly genetics.  There's no way to prevent them if you're destined to get them.  Sorry!

This. You can help the itching keeping your belly moisturized.

  • I would say avoid getting pregnant butttt I think it's too late for that.

  • I'll answer this the same way I always do.

    A miracle.

  • I wouldn't trade my pregnancy for anything! It's been great!
  • I don't know if it's genetics or my routine, but I haven't gotten stretch marks yet and I've been pregnant twice already.  I swear by all natural cocoa and/or shea butter.  The thick kind that you have to heat to apply.  I put on a thick layer every night before bed.
  • My doctors said the only thing you can do to help is to keep the area moisturezed and to keep try and keep your weight gain slow and steady. I use Neutrogena body oil and Eucerin Aquaphor and it helps with the dry feeling a lot!

  • it's all genetics. no amount of cocoa butter is going to stop it if you have the genes to. I only had like 3 stretch marks by time I was 37 weeks.. once I gave birth to my son, my stomach literally dropped & I have a road map on my stomach now
  • Thanks for your input! :)

  • A doula suggested olive oil - put it all over before you shower and it soaks into your skin - under there, back there, on the belly on the boobs....you might not be able to prevent them, but man I am soft!!! I also use a shea body butter after I get out of the shower in the morning.

One draw back is that I smell like dressing...but I don't care.

  • I didn't get any strecth marks with DS, even though my mother had them when pg with me and my brother. I use cocoa butter every time after I shower. Do I really think that's why I didn't get strecth marks last time? Prob not, but I'm sure as hell gonna keep using it!

  • When should you start using the cocoa butter or whatever? I'm 16 weeks, my bump is more noticable but not huge...do I work the butter now and keep at it for the rest of the pregnancy? Or wait a few more weeks?

I just started last week at 18 weeks.  I always start when my skin starts feeling a little tighter.

  • If you're going to get them, you're going to get them.

I applied every cream, stayed hydrated, gained at a steady rate and come from a long line of mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmothers who are all stretch mark free- I look like I was attacked by a cat on my lower half. There's literally NOTHING you can do- but moisturizing will help some of the itching. Just make sure you don't over do it because excessive moisture and heat can aggravate certain irritations that are not related to drying.

  • Genetics.  I did use Burt's Bees belly butter.  I never felt itchy or dry, but I really think it's in your genes.

  • I'm not sure you can do much, but it makes me feel better to use my Clarins body tonic oil, because so many women with no stretch marks swear by it. Also, jojoba oil is supposedly the closest thing to your body's natural oils, and it makes my skin feel great withuut being all oily.
  • You can't prevent stretch marks. It's genetics. If you got them when you went through puberty, you'll probably get them from pregnancy.

This is a test. This is only a test.
  • I know supposedly it's all genetics but I got stretch marks during puberty and with my last pregnancy I used Bio Oil twice a day, gained 60 pounds, popped out a 9 pounder and not 1 single stretch mark.  Genetics or not, you better bet I'm not gambling and I'm using that Bio Oil again this pregnancy!
