baby wearing... does it work for you?

hi! i'm amber and i'm slightly new to this online community. my husband and i just found out we're expecting our second child in late may/early june of next year and i have an eight month old at home right now. my question is do any of you ladies use the baby wraps (i.e. moby wraps) or anything of that sort to keep your hands free for your older children? does it work well, or is it more of an inconvenience when having to put baby in carseat, change diapers, etc.?

Re: baby wearing... does it work for you?

  • I wore #1 a fair amount but I wore #2 a TON.

It's especially good for when you're out and about and need both hands and legs free to chase after a toddler.

Wearing the baby was the only way I got any grocery shopping done in the beginning.

Before long I could change #1's diapers and do almost anything with #2 strapped onto me.  It's kinda like being pregnant - you learn how to work with having a big bulge on your front.

    So... YES!!!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • I'm wearing my dd right as I type this.  I wear her probably about 90% of her awake time.  I need my hands and arms to be able to take care of ds.  I do most things with her in it... change ds' diaper, give him a bath, make dinner (not frying foods though), put him to bed.... I can't imagine how I'd do it without one as she cries if left awake in the swing or pnp,
  • I would not be able to survive w/o my moby wrap.

  • I guess I am the odd woman out.  My daughter hated being worn unless she could face out (we used the Bjorn until I was advised not to) and I haven't worn my son at all.  I tried to put him in a hotsling and either I am just not coordinated enough or I couldn't get him in the right way.

  • I didn't wear my older one much.  I still wear my younger one daily, and I wore him all of the time the first 6 weeks or so.

  • Mine are not quite 2u2, but close enough.  I probably only wore DD1 a handful of times.  I had a sling, but basically only wore it as a hip carry when she was 6mo - 12 mo.  With DD2, I realized that there were going to be times that taking a double stroller wasn't going to work, so I got an Ergo.  I'm not much of a "baby-wearer", but I do really like the Ergo.  I use it mainly when I'm going places that the stroller isn't convenient.  I don't wear her at home or anything like that.  The best place I had it was at the beach.  Walking to the beach with all the stuff you need - the Ergo was a lifesaver!  Good luck with your decision.  Also, I have also heard that a bjorn (or that style) is not the best of carriers - the baby basically "hangs" from it, which is not good for their hips (DD1 had hip dysplasia, so I admit to being hyper sensitive about this issue).

  • i wouldn't survive w/ out it.  to me- moby= perfect for nb through about 6 months, then Ergo for ever after.
  • I hate to use it as much as I do because she is big and heavy, BUT I use our borrowed Bjorn anytime we leave the house.  She screams if she is in her infant seat, so our double stroller is a joke.  Plus, it is great for grocery shopping.  She especially likes facing out and laughing at her brother.

  • I wore #1 pretty frequently; I wore #2 all the time!  In fact, I used to wear both of them at once -- #1 was in a mei tai on my back, and #2 was in a sling on the front.

I like the mei tai or similar double shoulder carriers because it leaves both hands free.  Ring slings are great for speed and easy putting on, but you have to leave a hand on the kid.  I'm not a huge fan of the Moby, but that's probably because I live in a warmer climate and had summer babies.  I would have roasted in that much fabric.  My sister loved hers, though!
