I am trying my hardest to just feed the babies BM but everytime i pump (every 2hrs) i only get about 30 ml from each breast and at 6 days old the twins just seem like they aren't getting enough and i can't keep up with their feedings. Please help
1) If you strictly pump do you pump every hr? every 2hrs? what?? How much do you usually get this early?
2) It's now day 6 and my breasts are still not making that much milk? Am i doomed?
3) The twins feed all day long every 2-3 hrs sometimes more, sleep and are content but come 11:30pm - 5am they are unconsoleable. They were perfect in the hospital but since i've been home it's been a nightmare. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much ladies!
Re: breast pumping/feeding quests frm beginner w/twins
Are you only pumping? Latching them on is more efficient/easier.
I think you should be pumping every 2 hours for like 15-20 minutes each time. For me, my milk didn't come in until day 6, but for the first 3 weeks I latched C on and fed her and THEN pumped for 15 minutes every time to help establish good milk supply. You'll see people say to be careful of that but personally I'd rather have an oversupply than undersupply.
Make sure to drink LOTS of water and stay hydrated (every time you pump drink a glass of water) and eating oatmeal is suppose to help too.
Does your hospital have a breastfeeding support group? If they do GO! Or contact your local LLL for some help.
I don't have twins, but I do want to say that I don't think you are doomed. My son wasn't able to breastfeed at all, so I had to use the pump (I rented a hospital grade one) to bring in my supply. For about the first week I did have to supplement with formula because pumping is much less efficient at getting the milk out, especially at the beginning because colostrum is so thick. Don't feel bad about it if you have to give your LOs some formula now, but keep nursing lots, pumping lots, and eventually it will pay off and you will produce more milk. It is early days still... Good for you for trying to nurse/pump with twins, every bit of BM they get is good for them!
