Safety products

My parents want to buy the girls some Halloween presents.  They already bought them a few books, but since they have a lot of toys right now, they thought they would buy some saftey products since they may become mobile very soon.  Sorry I haven't had time to really research this, so I thought I'd just ask what products you thought were most important to have first?  Gates, outlet covers, etc.?  My house has a pretty open floor plan, so I need to look into how gates would work here!  Thanks!

ETA -also, if there are any specific products/brands you really liked, I'd appreciate any recommendations!

Re: Safety products

  • Mine started trying to crawl to places like the kitchen/bathroom before they started trying out fingers in sockets.  But wet fingers in sockets are not good!  If they are paying, I'd ask for the gates which can be costly.  I use simply gates my favorites cost about 85 each (munchkin brand).  My friend has a very open floor plan. Kitchen, dining room, great room, play area, etc are all open, no walls except the staircase in the middle, a few posts and the guest bath.  They managed to get gates just perfect for the house.  It can be done.  And suprisingly, it looks good too.  Outlet covers are inexpensive but make sure you have them BEFORE you need them!

Next came the pulling down of anything that can come down and then the opening of drawers, cabinets, etc.    And just when you think it's safe.. they can reach a little better and a little higher.  Don't forget your folding and sliding doors (closets/laundry).

Even if a drawer seems okay because there is nothing in it..little fingers can grasp the inside of the drawer and their weight can slam that same drawer shut..smashing the fingers.

They like cords and strings...  check your electrical cords and blinds, etc.  There are products for all these things, if you don't see them in the store check online.  I tend to find things I prefer online, but no preferences to brands 'cept for the Munchkin gates..but I don't think that is what you need.  Even be aware where you put your handbag.  They can tangle in the strap.  Don't want one to be tangled and the other yanking at it because she wants it too.

More on gates.  Metal is noisy. The ones that automatically close can be noisy too, or don't close properly, or smash fingers.  Yet they chew on wood.  Tall ones make it hard to pick up a child on the other side.  Some kids climb over short ones. Plastic and Mesh break easily.  At 4-5 months, I taught my kids up and down.  Now instead of them hanging and grabbing at the gate when I need to open it.. I tell them to sit down first so I can get thru.  Sometimes have to tell my girl twice, my son sits as soon as he sees mommy approaching the gate.

And they like to climb.  Climb. Climb!!!   When they start to crawl/sit up, take down any mobiles in the cribs. Lower the mattress BEFORE they stand.  Be aware that some babies sleep-crawl/stand/etc.  My girl sleepcrawls and my son sleepstands.  Be aware of what you need.  Products will only be useful if they fit your individual needs.  Drinks

  • A play yard with an extension kit is awesome! Its the one place I can safely leave the babies so I can use the bathroom or make myself a quick lunch.

Other things are outlet covers, doorknob covers, power strip protectors, toilet seat lid locks, table corner cushions, and blind cord protectors. Make sure rugs are slip proof.

Not exactly necessary, but you may soon want to buy something to protect the cribs from teething. We just bought fleece rail guards because LOs started chewing on their cribs. They seem to be working great so far!

  • Thank you both so much for your responses - they are very helpful!

This is also making me realize just how much you have to worry once they are moving around.  So I better enjoy their immobility while it lasts :)
