My class is so poorly behaved I leave daily with horrible headaches - like blinding headaches that have me crying in bed by 8:30. The parents are equally challenging and each day the principal or I get a phone call or email about something that went on throughout the day. I am completely miserable. I know for a fact that the team below me built my class assuming that I would end up leaving at some point throughout the year. Nice right?
I regret putting in my letter saying I would leave at the end of March because I can't see myself making it that long with this class. I'm just waiting for my dr. to say something about my blood pressure if I end up in his office after a particularly rough day. Sucks.
Re: Work is driving me crazy :( vent
Sounds like my class, they are just out of control - budget cuts = bigger class sizes. Except for parents, I have crazy administrators. I come home and cry because it sucks so much. I am waiting for my doctor to do the same thing. GL to you!!
I put up with no crap from kids. They know from day one I mean business. Some challange me and I figure they will. But after a few reminders that I dont play those games they turn around. There are still those days that certain kids will step over that line but we have a talk and it goes back to what I call a normal routine.
I am sorry you have to deal with these kids. I wish I could come be your teacher aide for a week or two. Wait what grade level do you teach?
HUGS!!
I'm embarrassed to say that I teach second grade. There is no earthly reason why things should be this difficult. I always end up with a challenging class and by October we're usually smooth sailing. This group however is just something different. I think a lot of my difficulty is actually stemming from the parents, kids are out of control and disrespectful and parents allow it to continue and CONSTANTLY make excuses for the behaviors.
My prinicpal had the nerve to ask me if my class was really that bad or if it was just "my hormones" I've never been so mad as I was after hearing that.
Ohhh those type of parent irk me. Or the ones that say "my child would never do that". I learned to tell them "your child probably behaves differently when s/he isnt at home, this is what I see here. Don't you wish you could have a hidden camera so then these indenial parents can see how their child really is when they arent around?
I hope things get better.
I hate these types of parents, but then you realize where the kids get their attitudes from. I teach high school and once in a while I get a kid with a disgusting sense of entitlement.I hope it gets better for you, hang in there!
As for your principal, what was that word again..........douchecanoe, yeah I think that's it!
douchecanoe! Yes!!
Thanks ladies
Could you invite the parents that are the major problems to your class to observe their student? Also, we have a card system that works really well! You obviously start on green (good behavior), yellow (warning and I send a note home everytime the student gets to yellow), red (they lose recess and at that point the student calls the parent and tells them what they've done to get to red), blue (afterschool detention), and then black (ISS). I've actually had kids get to black in one day, but for the most part, after 3 days of ISS they're ready to get back to their classmates and the actual classroom.
By the way, this is a school wide system, but I think it would work pretty well in just one classroom. I'm sorry you have to deal with problem kids and as a 1st grade teacher, I think that the teachers that "built" this class need to give you insights on how they dealt with the problem students. Hope you have a better day tomorrow and just think...it's Thursday! One day 'til the weekend!
I'm totally feeling your pain. I teach 4th-6th grade math and science in a multi-age classroom. We're also in an area that is horrible for parental involvement and there is absolutely no discipline in the home. Even though I don't put up with anything out of line, it's still really challenging. If my husband gets his new job, I'm definitely leaving before my due date. I would suggest that if it gets that hard, consider leaving before you expected to. Your health and well-being is way more important.
On another note, we videotape our classes if we feel that some kids are totally out of control. We show it to principals and parents or whoever doesn't believe how bad they are being. Maybe that might be something you could try?
