TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

Some D&C questions

I'm scheduled for it tomorrow (not sure what time yet, they haven't told me).  I'm cramping heavily right now and passing small clots and have dark red bleeding.  If I pass the sac today, is there a point to going through with the D&C tomorrow (other than avoiding more cramping and lots more bleeding)? Will they still do it?

Do they need the actual sac to do testing, or is the residual tissue and stuff helpful as well?

I'm supposed to have company tomorrow night (a very good friend, who knows whats going on with me, and who I don't mind seeing me in not a great state).  If my procedure is in the morning, will I be up for that? All I'll have to do is hang out with her on the couch, really - but will I be "with it"? I'm not sure what to expect.

Re: Some D&C questions

  • I can't help with the info about the bleeding - with both my m/c I never had any bleeding but you should be fine by the evening after your D&C.  I came home and slept for a few hours but then was up and around and bored.  I bled for a long time after my D&E but not heavy bleeding so you shouldn't have to worry about the inconvience of that either.

If you pass the sac there's probably no point in the D&C. At that point I think it becomes an unnecessary surg. Following a D&C you will have some bleeding and cramping anyway so (sorry love) you're in for cramps tomorrow one way or the other.

If you just continue to cramp and bleed, I'd go ahead with the D&C for all the reasons you listed earlier (not wanting to emotionally deal with what you would see or have that pain). Plus, this way they will more easily be able to collect what they need for testing (not sure if they would need the sac or if other tissue would work).

Regarding that evening, I think it depends on your pain level. If you're in serious pain and need to take the serious drugs then yes, you'll be out of it. However, all three times I found OTC drugs handled the cramping just fine. My last procedure was early afternoon and I was still just fine by evening.

But I think what would matter more is, do you want to be alone or would having someone there to help with DS, fix a plate of food so you don't have to move, whine with you, cry with you, etc. It's going to be much more about what you emotionally need vs. physically can handle.

  • BGP covered what I was going to say. I would call for sure to get the doc's opinion on all this, esp. in terms of the testing.

    ::Hugs:::

  • My doctor's office was really helpful with these sorts of questions...I mentioned in your last post that I had started bleeding before my D&C.  I called them & the nurse encouraged me to come in.  My doctor said that if everything didn't pass, I might wind up needing a D&C anyway.  What I decided to do was to keep the appointment & have them check on me then...if I didn't need the procedure, then it was just a minor inconvenience, no big deal.  But at least I could have them check me & answer any more questions.

I'm not sure which tissues they test.  I'd imagine the sac is the most important, but they may want to test placenta, too.  :(  I don't know if I'd worry about trying to save anything while you're at home that doesn't look like the sac (but, again, I'd ask).

I had my D&C in the morning (around 9am, I think?).  I was fine when we left the hospital early afternoon.  In fact, we stopped at Wal-Mart after to pick up some ibuprofen!  My mother came down from out-of-town later in the afternoon & stayed with DH & I for the weekend.  Even though I had a fight with her earlier in the week (mom's a FH, go figure) I was really glad to have the extra support & she was awesome.

Again, these are all really personal decisions, but I thought it might help to share my experiences.  I'm so, so sorry that you're having to go through this.  ((BIG HUGS))

  • I talked to my doctor about this because I was already bleeding before my 2nd D&C.  She said it actually makes the procedure and recovery go smoother if the m/c has started on it's own.

I don't know what tissue they use for testing.  I'm not sure I would've known if the sac was part of what came out.  If you really think you've passed most of it, I'd let your doctor know and maybe they can check you before the procedure.

As for recovery, I went to a get together at my Mom's house after.  It was just my immediate family and they all knew, so I did fine.  Physically, I don't think you'd have any trouble just hanging on the couch and being coherent.  It's the emotional part that you only you know what you can handle.

    Big hugs.

  • I passed the sac the day before my D&C last November and they were still able to do testing.  I would call and make sure, though.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

Yep. I agree. I took the rx pain meds afterwards. I was fine laying on the couch afterwards and talking to people. It's kinda like the last day before you go back to work after having a bad flu for a few days.

  •  i never really started bleeding before my D&C so i'm not much help there.  but i think it's best you call your doc and see what they say.

as for hanging out afterwards i felt ok except for being alittle crampy.  i never even took a nap or anything just relaxed at home.

  • Everyone's different afterwards.  I wasn't in a ton of pain, but I was sick to my stomach from the anesteshia.  I vomited at the hospital, on the way home, & for a couple hours afterwards.  It may have had something to do with the fact that they had to stick a tube down my throat during surgery to help with breathing.  I would not have wanted company that night.

I think everyone else's experiences are probably much more common.  I've gotten sick every time I've been put under.

And like other posters said, I don't think you'd need the d&c if you pass the sac today.  ::::Hugs::::

  • bgp covered my thoughts very well.

for my d&c (2nd m/c), it was in late morning, I was home by mid afternoon, and feeling okay enough to be alert, on couch with take out and movie. having a friend there is really how you feel - but I think it would be nice if she/he is the  type of friend you can just veg with and be supported.

    Thinking of you.

  • I started bleeding the morning of my D&C but I went in for it anyway.  Oddly enough I didn't have any bleeding or much cramping after my D&C.  It was a really easy procedure and I just came home and laid on the couch and watched movies with DH for the rest of the day.  I felt totally "normal" the next day (at least physically).  Best of luck tomorrow and I am so, so sorry.  (((HUGS)))
