Postpartum Depression

Prozac... questions

LO is 7 weeks old, and I finally just crashed.  I think I knew something wasn't right with me when I came home from the hospital, but I've been trying to "work through it" on my own, and Friday night I crashed.  I'm a mess.  Even worse, the Doc isn't open on the weekend, so needless to say it's been a long weekend.

I finally went in this morning, and they put me on 20mg of Prozac.  I guess my question is- if you take Prozac, how long until you started to feel different?  I just want to feel like me again, or something close at least.  I never thought I'd get PPD, I hate that I feel this way.  But I do, so I guess I'm just hoping that this medication starts to make me feel better soon.

Re: Prozac... questions

  • I spent the entire first year of my sons life trying to "work through it" myself. Thank goodness you decided to talk to your Dr a lot sooner than I did! I remember DH finding me broken down bawling in the shower. Ugh, not fun times. For me it took Prozac less than a week to start working (thank God), but I know it's different for everyone and can take up to a month for some people. You're not alone and things will get better soon ((HUGS)).

Oh and for the record, I haven't had any side effects except a little stomach pain every now and then. Really nothing close to making me even start to consider not taking it anymore.

  • I started taking the same dose at 28w and it took about 4 days to see significant difference and about 3 weeks to feel the full effects. After I had my daughter I was switched to 50mg Zoloft and I feel back to normal.

  • Prozac was the only anti-dep that I didn't have side effects with. It works great for me and I took all while pregnant and nursing DS. I'm sure everyone is different, but I felt worse about 3 weeks into taking it and finally MUCH better after 6 weeks.
