OK, tell me honestly: for those of you that have had an HSG test done, how painful was it, on a scale from 1-10 (1 being not at all, 10 being REALLY BAD)?
I've had an endo biopsy done and that hurt like hell! Is it comparable to an HSG?
I am trying to figure out if I can just bypass that test, or if it's really necessary and if the pain of it is something I should not be so freaked out over.
Thanks for any input!

Re: HSG Test on a Scale of 1-10...
10.
But it didn't last long. I thought I was going to jump off the table. After my HSG, I decided I would definitely have an epidural when I have a baby.
I've never had a biopsy
For my HSG- I had real intense pain that only lasted a few seconds as they were pushing the dye through the sludge in my tubes- my tubes weren't blocked but they did have some debris that was pushed through w/ the dye and that hurt like an MFer. Luckily though it jut lasted a few seconds although it felt like forever. Just when I was thinking this is horrible- the pain was over.
If it's a necessary test, I'd do it.
ETA: I too felt like I wanted to jump off the table. But, it was a short moment of pain so that's what made it bearable.
I would definitely say a 9 or 10. It only lasted about 10 seconds but those were the longest 10 seconds ever !
It was worth it, though, as I wouldn't have been able to do any IF treatments w/o having it done. There would have been no sense to take clomid or anything if your tubes are blocked.

1 - For the test itself
15 - For the cramps I had for hours when I got home. I'm with njohnson, I will also have an epidural when I have a baby b/c of these painful cramps.

Thank you for your honesty. I am screwed!
As my dentist says: I have a very low tolerance for pain and a very high tolerance for pain meds. When I go to the dentist, they have to give me the legal maximum required in a 24 hr. period just to dull the pain.
When I had the endo biopsy done, I started crying and begging the doctor to stop. When I went in for a sonohysterogram a week later, they had to give me a Xanax just to get me on the table.
As I said, I am screwed
I think it will be different for everyone.
HSG - 3 for me - but the hysteroscopy (which is fine for some) was horrible for me. I almost passed out from pain on their first attempt. I have an extremely narrow and angled cervix. I have to be put to sleep for them to perform this procedure.
I would say 3. While it was uncomfortable, it wasn't anything like I was expecting pain-wise. I had minor cramping after.
I hope yours is easy as well!

I have to have biopsy's every 3 months due to the cancer that was in my endometrial lining. They hurt something horrible and my HSG pain was comparable! I did jerk my bum up off the table. But it's an excellent test that I do think is necessary for most.
I was relieved to find that my tubes were not blocked and I didn't have any scar tissue from all 5 of my dnc's. It's one of the few female test I've ever got an A+ on so that made me feel better about the pain lol.
Good Luck!

4 - overall
They never managed to get the cathater in, but they were still able to push the dye in. The only "real" pain was cramping when they dye goes into the uterus - it lasts all of 5 seconds.
Thank you IVF for our little miracles!!
Take 800-1,000 mg of Ibuprofen before hand. That will help. Again, the pain was very short. I was able to go back to work and felt fine. It was while the dye was in that I was miserable.
You might also be able to get your doctor to give you a valium to make it easier.
Good luck.
I've been told it's less painfull if the RE does it (over the u/s tech).
My RE did mine, and I'd say the procedure was no more painfull then a pap. I didn't have any blockages and the cramping afterwards was a bit umcomfy, but not too bad. I'd say it was a 3 or 4.
Good luck and remember to take Advil at least an hour before.
My RE says the same thing. I had mine done by a radiologist.
My RE did my HSG himself and I seriously had no pain whatsover. I was shocked! I'd heard it would hurt terribly but I only had 3 seconds of cramping while the dye went through my tubes. Hopefully you'll have the same experience I did!
ETA: YES! I agree with those who said it hurts less if the RE does it. When I told my RE how happy I was that it didn't hurt, he said it helps when an actual RE does it and not just a tech. I had never given that any thought but I'm extremely grateful that my HSG was done by my doctor
I would say a 5. It wasn't exactly pain, it was just like the worst AF cramps I ever had. It only lasted 2 minutes or so and I was fine afterward. I did not have any blockage.
Good luck!

Like the PP said, my RE told me it would be much less painful since he was doing it.
I also took 2 Advil an hour beforehand.
It was painful for about 5 seconds, but I was surprised by how intense the cramping was for that 5 seconds. He explained that your uterus always tries to expel "foreign objects, like your period" and I wanted to say "pardon me, but this is nothing like my period!!!"

My HSG was a 9 or 10, and my endo biopsy was a 7 or 8. They both sucked.
