Working Moms

babysitter/nanny hourly

I know this is very regional but what the heck is normal hourly for baby & a 2 year old? I am still so all over the place with my plans for childcare with my newbie arriving in just a few weeks.  I have an unemployed girlfriend who has been helping me out a bit, a couple of evenings including putting DS down for bed for the night, but mostly at night when he's already asleep.  I've been giving her $10 an hour.  I think that's kind of the going rate.  But what do I pay her hourly (b/c it will only be partial days when I "go back" to working.  It's my own business so I'm really never leaving, just slowing down) for DS and newbie?  I should probably jsut talk to her about it and come up with a weekly rate or something.  It will be 3 days a week, just newbie from 9am-noon when DS gets picked up from school by her around the corner, lunch & almost immediate naptime for DS, care for newbie & DS if he even wakes up till I get home on the average I'd say 3pm. Is $200/week fair? And then pay her extra for the unforseen times that always come up?

Re: babysitter/nanny hourly

  • I live in Nassau County and paid $10 an hour for my first born when she was 4 months old and started at the sitter.  I worked 2 days a week.  Then I went up to 3 days a week and had another baby.  Addition of second child brought rate up to 13/hour.

  • I am in Columbus, OH, and I pay my sitter $200 a week for 5 days of 8 - 4:30pm.  However, it is at her house, and she has a carseat base & other stuff that allows her to take DD with her on errands, etc.

Also, this is not her primary source of income.  She is a SAHM who just wanted to babysit.

  • Our sitter charges $10 per hour for one kid and $12 for two kids.  It seems to be pretty standard around here.  We use her at night and on the weekends.  I don't know about if that rate would apply for nanny work.
