I didn't ask the doctor but we started DD1 on milk at just over 11 months. Around that time I found out I was pregnant again and we were told that because of my history of m/c getting pregnant with DD1 it would be better not to continue BFing. She hated formula and I was already in the process of weaning from BFing to a milk anyway so she was getting a little bit and liked it so we just made a full switch. With DD2 I was also BFing so as I started to wean at 11 months I dropped a feeding a week and replaced with whole milk.
This time DS is formula fed so I don't know that we will switch him early but I'll probably start to introduce some whole milk during the 11th month to prepare him.

Jersey girl, So how did you switch? I am bfing and I was thinking would I mix the milks together and put them in a cup? I hate to get him hooked to the bottle, but I hate changing both things for him to!
Our pedi told us to start at 11 months since DS has tolerated yogurt and cheese with no problems. I'll still be nursing when I am home so, it will only be once or twice a day when I'm at work.

Our Pedi said we could start the transition at 11 months and she didn't care if at that point she was on 100% whole milk or not, but preferred she didn't have any milk before that. I had a freezer stash that would take her to about 8 days shy of 11 months and did not want to switch from formula to BM for 8 days. So we made the decision to start a little early because it was what we felt was best for DD. We started giving her whole milk today in her bottle mixed with BM. We are doing 1 oz in each bottle for 2 days, then 2 oz for 2, then 3 oz. etc. She will be fully on whole milk 1 day shy of 11 months.
