Your opinion on the name Claire

Hi all.

What is your opinion of the name Claire? I mentioned this to a friend, and she got a nauseated face and said every claire she knows is a B*#@h.

My DH was very against it at first. He said he instantley thought of his 6'2 Native American friend.

What do you think?

Re: Your opinion on the name Claire

  • I think it's a lovely name. Currently rising in popularity, but it's a classic so it will always be "popular".

  • I think it is a beautiful, classic name.

I'm not a fan of one syllable first names, so I personally wouldn't use it as a first name. However, we were planning to use it for a middle name if we had a girl in honor of my grandmother (Clarice).

  • It's currently our #1 girl name :-)

And there is a different between popular and trendy. Classic names, like Claire, are popular because they stand the test of time...I'm fine with that.

Trendy names are popular for only a moment in time and then sound "dated" thereafter.

  • I think it's pretty boring. Maybe for a middle name though.
  • I love it.  Clare (family spelling) is near the top of my list.

  • WTH? This is so strange to me. I would think that there are enough Claires running around that most people would have more than one association with the name, and would be able to get past a bad reference like that.

To answer your question, my opinion on the name is that it's a filler. In fact I'm so tired of hearing it as a middle name, that I've gotten to where I can't stand it as a first name either. But it is a beautiful classic name, similar to Marie.... just way overused. Sorry.

lol. This is an interesting connection to make.

    I love Claire.

  • To me, this is like asking, "What do you think of the name John?"  It's a name.  It's a nice name, but nothing special, just a name.  It has stood the test of time and is not bad but does nothing for me, because it is just boring to me, but I like more uncommon names.
  • Timeless, good for any age, easy to pronounce, easy to spell, feminine.  It's very popular but I don't think it's overused.  I love it, personally.

  • Claire is our top choice right now, and going by my babynames.com link in my siggy, it seems like a lot of other people like it too.  I think its funny when people say names are too popular, because I really think that all depends on your area.  Claire may be considered "popular" by some, but I've never met a Claire in my life.  Obviously, I know there are a lot out there, but I think the fact that I've never met one (or know anyone who has met one) leads me to believe they're probably not sooooo common that I need to rule it out.  Jennifer/Jessica in the 80's though, that's another story lol I know about 20 Jennifers and 20 Jessica's (at least) born in the 80's.

As far as your friend saying every Claire she knows is a B*tch, when DH first suggested Claire, I thought spoiled brat.  But it's grown on me, and I decided that just because I used to think of a spoiled brat when I heard the name Claire, doesn't mean that if I name my daughter Claire, she will be a spoiled brat.

  • It's a classic name, and I don't have any horrible name association with it but it is just a little too plain for my taste. Maybe it would work better as a middle name.

  • I love it.  It actually used to be among my top choices.

Then I had 2 close girlfriends name their DD's Claire.  So, it's out for us.

  • If this baby is a girl, her name will be Claire.  It is on the upswing, but it's not THAT popular.  It is #53 on 2009 ss list.

DH grandma's name was Maryclaire, so they baby will be named after her.  I think it's a beautiful name.

  • I love Claire!  It is difficult to use as a first name...there doesn't seem to be many middle names that sounds too good with it.  I do like Claire Elizabeth and Claire Elise though.

I may be in the minority here, but I actually have to agree with your friend.  All the Claires I have known tend to be really bitchy or snobby.  Maybe just bad luck.

I'm also just really tired of this name.

  • I have to say, I'm amazed to hear that both your friend and your husband disliked that name.

Here I thought I've been on crazy pills because I swear I'm the only person who doesn't like Claire....

  • My LO's name will be Claire Elise.  It's feminine, simple, and classic.  It is a hard name to find a middle name to go with since it is one syllable.  My husband and I really like the name.  My husband calls our LO Claire Bear and I think it's adorable.
