Supply issues

I have been having supply issues and my doc put me on something and it helped for awhile, but has tanked again recently. I thankfully fed DD lots of solids last cause when she woke up in the night hungry, I nursed her and nothing. This morning has a little bit but not much. Im really worried as breast feeding is very important to me and also, dd wont take a bottle. Any tips or help. Im getting pretty upset. Thanks

Re: Supply issues

  • Have you tried all the traditional ways to help your supply?  Fenugreek, blessed thistle, goat's rue, oatmeal, flaxseed meal, brewer's yeast, tons of water, mother's milk tea, pumping after feedings...

  • Is it possible my baby is too big for me? This may sound ridiculous, but she is big and I am not. She is 20 lbs and 30 inches and I am 5'8 and 125lbs. Is it possible I can't keep up with her? I eat none stop to try and help it, but its not working.

  • Those things didn't completely do the trick for me either.  What did was domperidone.  It's like reglan but it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier and thus doesn't cause depression.  It's not approved in the US so you either have to get a Rx and buy it from a compounding pharmacy or go renegade and buy it online.

  • This might sound silly, but are you sure you are eating enough?

Another thought is to power pump. When LO is napping, pump for 10 min, then rest for 10 min, then pump again and do this for an hour. It might help.

  • Question - how do you know she wasn't getting anything? Did you not feel a letdown? Was she acting like she was still hungry?

Are you taking any new medicines? Even antihistamines or OTC meds?

It seems like everyone goes through a supply drop around 8-9 months. What's up with that? I went through it too, I was freaking out.

I think I did too at this time. Interesting. I remember posting on here and freaking out about it. It might have to do with them eating more solids and maybe they don't need as much milk?

That was definitely the case for me.  I was freaking out and trying everything to get my pumping output back up, but in the end I decided DD just didn't need as much (she wouldn't drink it on the days I did manage to produce it, and that became consistent).  I think she's dropping her intake again now.  I think it can be a little disconcerting because I expected it to be gradual but instead it seems like she'll suddenly drop a bottle/feeding and just be done with it.

  • yeah, I eat 6-7 small meals a day to keep up and my milk would not let down and she was getting really cranky. My mom said to try oatmeal. I have been going through some pretty stressful personal stuff too so that might be why. Maybe I will go do some yoga tonight and relax :)

Stress always kills my supply. I've literally been pumping while working, had a stressful thing happen, & my output will just stop.

Oatmeal is really helpful but you have to eat a good bit, & it needs to be the  real stuff, not instant. I have a bowl in the a.m. (1/2 cup), then I eat Back to Nature Granola cereal at least twice a day. Granola = mostly oatmeal. Anyway, it's one of only 2 cereals I can have with Ari's allergies & I go through a bag every 2-3 days.

My supply dipped around this time too but came back with some MMP & power pumping/nursing. I noticed my let down didn't feel as strong anymore too, but I can see when I'm pumping that it is. Hopefully after a few days you'll get it back up. Get some rest & try not to stress, it becomes a viscious cycle.

Oh, & don't worry about not being big enough. I only weigh 105 now, I'm 5'3", & I can still keep up with Ari's milk needs. I've def had supply bumps but it comes back.

  • I also had a supply dip around 8/9 months.  I remember freaking out and posting about it.  I used to letdown quickly and it was pretty forceful.  Since 8/9 months, my letdown is slower and not as strong.  In the last week, there have been a couple of times when I didn't feel a letdown but when DD unlatched I could see milk.

I began drinking lots of water, mother's milk tea and eating oatmeal.  Offer the breast regularly.  Around 8/9 months, DD was very interested in her world and being able to crawl everywhere.  She would latch for a few minutes and crawl away.  I think that this had something to do with my supply issues.  This phase passed after a couple of weeks and she was back to regular nursing.  Keep yourself hydrated, eat well, try to relax and offer the breast as often as you can.  GL!
