some Q's about hospital bags...

I started throwing stuff in my bag yesterday, and I threw in a small bag of sample size toiletries, such as toothpaste, shampoo, lotion, mouthwash, etc.  I know everyone said that the hospital provides a lot of stuff, but do they provide those?  Are you guys going to bring your own anyway? They are pretty small and I always buy samples of the brands I like to use on vacations and such.

Also, do I seriously have to go out and buy breast pads or will the hospital give me those?

Re: some Q's about hospital bags...

  • The shampoo and conditioner in l&d at my hospital are terrible! I'm putting a real hospital bag together as soon as I get home and I'm definitely having H go get travel sizes of my brands! It might not seem that important, but I know how amazing my shower last night finally felt and it would have been nirvana if my hair didn't feel nasty from non-foaming antibacterial shampoo :-P

    ICK!

I guess I need to start a bag too. Sheesh.

  • I'm bringing travel sized versions of my favorite products. It doesn't take up much space and after giving birth and being sleep deprived I imagine a few comforts of home for showers will feel great.  As far as breast pads, I'm going to have to buy them anyway so I'll probably throw a handful in my hospital bag too. If they have them great, but if not I'll be prepared.

  • They pretty much provide everything, but I'm packing my own toiletries too.  My hair is spoiled and will only accept Paul Mitchell or Biolage, lol.  I'm not sure about breast pads though, I'll have to ask about that...

  • The stuff my hospital provides is like dollar store quality. I already purchased a few travel sized things that I will take with me. Ours does not provide breast pads so I will be taking those. I might also buy a cheap pair of slippers to take and trash when we're discharged. Hospital floors are nasty so I don't want to take any germs/blood/other-ick that might be on the floor home with me.

  • Just one suggestion that we were given in our Bradley class, pack 2 bags, one for labor only and one for your stay.  Bring only the labor bag in when you 1st go to the hospital & don't stress about your hospital stay bag because your DH or someone else can always go back and get it after you have delivered.  This made perfect sense for DH & I since I have packing "issues" and don't want him lugging that much around when we're trying to focus on the delivery.

Not sure if they provide or not since it takes a bit for your milk to come in, I don't know if you'll need them that early on.  You will need them regardless so why not just buy them ahead of time?  I have some on my registry & have already gotten 2 packs.

  • At my birthing class a question came up about what to pack.  This is what our nurse/teacher said:

Small toiletry bag (as they do not have them)

    Tums

    A comfy outfit for ourselves

    A baby coming home outfit

Any meds for DH or whomever your coach is

    Snacks

    Cell phone/charger

and then of course you can add what you want, but those are really all you need.

  • I have to provide pretty much everything, so my list is different. These are the essentials:

    Small toiletry bag and towel

    sanitary towels

    camera etc

    PJs for mommy

    a coming-home outfit for ourselves

all of baby's clothes and diapers

    snacks

    Mum to W (4) and M (nearly 2)
  • I am going to bring my own and I think I am going to splurge and get some fancy toiletries. I have heard from multiple friends that the shower after you give birth is the best!!

  • I have heard from others that the breast pads provided by the hospital aren't great and it is better just to bring a some of your own.  I will bring my own personal toiletry bag.  I have most things already packed because I have been getting travel sized items.  I've also included chapstick because I have read multiple places it is needed after a long birthing process.  I love the thought of having a labor bag and then a hospital stay bag.  I won't need much when I am in labor so it may make the process easier.

Another thing that I have read and witnessed is that you may want to take your own bath towel that you don't mind tossing after use.  The hospital provided towels are tiny and like many you have said sometimes it is the small comforts of home that help you feel better.  I haven't decided if I am going to take one yet.  I am going to see how much room I have in my bag first.

I've been thinking about doing this, too!!

I have a really random, stupid question.. what kind of pajamas and snacks are people bringing.  I mean.. around the house I just wear sweats and a tshirt.  should I splurge on some nice jammies or a gown or something?  and as for snacks, it says the hospital provides lots of snacks.. should I still bring my own?  what kind is everybody packing? I want details people!!!

  • I figure I will bring both a gown and then a t-shirt pajama pant combo because I normally don't wear a gown.  I am like you pajama pants and a random t-shirt (not matchy matchy).  As far as snacks go, I know at the hospital I will deliver at they have a room that has a fridge full of stuff from the cafeteria like salads and sandwiches, juices, water, and individually wrapped crackers and stuff like that.  I think that if you didn't want to pack snacks you would get by with what was offered.  It would depend on how particular your coach is.  I am sure you won't be concerned with snacks.  It was all really for the patients family/friends.
