Background: We have gone from bedsharing, to the co-sleeper, and finally to the crib about a month ago. She has been waking up every hour or so all. night. long. I don't mind nursing her to sleep, and i wouldn't even mind nursing once or twice during the night. DH takes every other waking, but we can't continue to wake up every hour or two. I know the problem is that she can't put herself to sleep, so when she wakes up, she needs our help. I've read the Sleep Book by Sears and the NCSS and tried those "gentle" techniques with no luck. We are considering a modified CIO technique, maybe one where we check in to let her know we are there. We need to help her learn how to put herself back to sleep, both for our sake, and for her own too.
If you have done CIO or modified CIO with an older baby (particularly one who can stand in the crib), could you please share your techniques and successes? Thanks in advance - i'm one tired mama.
Re: If you've recently done CIO please come in...
I highly recommend Ferber's book. It really helps you understand how sleep associations work and, frankly, makes you feel a bit better about the whole CIO thing.
I did Ferber when DD was 7 months old, so she couldn't stand up in her crib yet, but does now. It's not a big deal. She stands up and cries sometimes, but eventually lays herself back down.
DD stands but she will lay herself back down. She'll cry standing up. then cry sitting down, then moan laying down, then she's asleep.
Honestly picture her as a screaming tantrum throwing 3 year old and it makes it easier. I know K is fed, loved, drugged (if she's teething or has a fever), and dry and so it's not THAT hard to let her cry. When she hits the ape sh!t level i used to go in and try to sooth her but that just made it last longer and make her cry worse. So we let it go. Now she'll cry for MAYBE 5-10 mins if that.
After the past week, I would step in front of a bus for Dr. Ferber.
Previous bedtime routine went like this:
needing to nurse/rock to sleep, then holding her for at least half an hour, then tiptoeing away from the crib and THEN dealing with 4-5 (shrieking) wakings and THEN waking at 4 am and needing to bring her into our bed to get back to sleep.
After 6 days of Ferber, we put her down awake last night and she went to sleep alone with no crying. No night wakings. Wakes up happy at 7 am.
Read Ferber. I am a passionate convert.
