School-Aged Children

Are your kids STARVING after school?

Lunch is early - 11am, but I give him plenty.  Probably more than he would eat at home.  And he has a snack at 1pm.  At 3, walking home, he's asking for food - and eats a substantial enough snack that it's almost a second lunch.  And he eats dinner only a few hours later.

Anyone else?

Re: Are your kids STARVING after school?

  • Yes, my kids are always hungry right after school.  They eat at 12:00 and I make them fairly large lunches.  It's all that brain power burning up the calories.

  • Yes. But I know she is not finishing her lunch and she doesn't finish all of her breakfast either. She usually eats at my Mom's house b/c her grandparents pick her up from school and then when I pick her up she eats dinner a few hours later.

  • YES and my son isn't a big eater normally.  He comes home from school and wants at least 2 snacks...then eats dinner by 6pm.

  • Yeah same here. SS eats pretty much another lunch after school. His lunch is at 11:15 which he eats most of and a full dinner.

SD#1 doesn't have lunch till 1:25 but still wants a snack.

SD#2 and SD#3 have a medium snack but don't eat there complete lunch or dinner.

  • I remember growing up that I was always starving by the end of the day of school.

My 6 year old is definitely hungry when I get him. He has lunch around 12:20 and it's several hours later that I pick him up.

  • Yes! DD eats at 11:00 and has snack 3:00 and still eats a small meal after school at 4:30 even though we eat dinner at 5:30. I'm having to make 2-3 trips to the store each week to keep her stocked in fresh fruit and other healthy snacks.
  • Yes.  He gets a snack at his after school program and when he comes home he's still asking for a snack.  I usually give him a cheese stick or a piece of fruit.  If he refuses, then I know he's not that hungry.

  • Yes -- my DS particularly.  DD is just used to going through the day without many snacks.

My DS's schedule is similar to what you describe: recess at 10:40, lunch at 11:10, then a snack around 1:30.  He's still starving when he comes home.  And his after school snacks don't seem to stop him from eating a full dinner, either!

  • I feel weird being the only one saying No. He's usually not starving after school. Lunch is at 11:15 and than they have snack from 2:30-2:45 than they are released at 3pm. So he's just had a juice box and a snack right before he comes home. Good thing is that he eats all of his dinner at 6! :)
  • Yes! DS's lunch is at 11a.m. as well and for some reason, only kindergarteners are allowed snack time! My stepfather picks DS up from school and is always making him another meal as soon as they get home. DS will still eat dinner as well...I've just chalked it up to the fact that he's a growing boy but I really wish they would give these kids a snacktime to get them through the afternoon.
  • Yep!  She is always ready for dinner when she comes home.  We give her a snack to hold her over.
