Lunch for toddlers

Okay, DC just texted me today that I need to pack more in Annabelle's lunch. I usually pack an entire fruit (banana, apple, peach, grapes) cut up, cheerios in a bag, and either some kind of veggie too. They say she needs more. Okay so I can do mac & cheese, some kind of pasta dish. What other things could I pack? Help!

Re: Lunch for toddlers

  • Ella's normal lunch is pasta (ravioli or spaghetti) with and without sauce, some chopped up veggies (w/ the pasta normally), mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, meatballs (turkey and beef).  I also leave some single packs of applesauce/blueberry applesauce and mandarin oranges in her cubby @ school.  Grilled cheese is also popular, scrambled eggs, black beans and rice and a little cheese - you may need to get a thermos to keep foods hot.  Yogurt, pretzels, crispix or life cereal, muffins.

  • does your DC provider heat up things for her? I ask b/c mine has a policy that they do not heat up foods.....which I thought was stupid at first but I guess its a liability thing b/c it would be very easy to overheat something and cause a burn. ANYWAY....I am rambling.....

I do mac and cheese...I didn't think he would like it cold but he does. Today for example he got a waffle with pumpkin butter to spread on it, some cut up grapes, banana, yogurt, for lunch I did a cream cheese and jelly sandwich (I toast the bread), cut up avocado, some pirate's booty (its a puffed corn snack) and a cereal bar.

I also do cut up cheese a lot, any kind of pasta like egg noodles or tortellinis. Tons of fruit just because he loves fruit. Have you checked out weelicious? Lots of good toddler recipes on there. I made the veggie pancakes on there and they were a hit with him.

Yes they heat up food. Well they were heating up her formula, but now that she is on WM, I guess they are giving it to hear cold. I'll check out that website. I usually just pack whatever we had for dinner that night for lunch the next day. But I'm struggling with ideas.

  • I am a big fan of Quesadillas, you can put whatever you want in it.  It is a sneaky way of getting protein and veggies in your LO.  I do chicken or turkey with spinach and cheese a lot.  DS eats it warm or cold.

Some other things not already mentioned that I do are soy nuggets and soy burgers.  Yo baby yogurts.

DS loves cream cheese on anything, crackers, toast.....

Low sodium Turkey Lunch meat cut really thick so you can cube it.  DS does not like it but my nieces loved it.  Serve with cubed cheese.  Easy and cold.

I am going to try hummus tomorrow?

My son LOVES hummus. I have recently started making him hummus quesadillas too, which were a HUGE hit.

  • Quesadillas=moms best friend

I swear I could put anything in one and he would go to town.  Especially when it is masked by cheese!!!!!!!!!

  • My DD (almost 3) has basically the same lunch every day which is eerily similar to the every day the same lunches that I had growing up!

    -1 cup of milk

    - 1 thing of string cheese

    - 1 cup of fruit (cut up grapes, strawberries, watermelon, etc)

    - half of a turkey sandwich- deli turkey, cheese on whole wheat bread

Sometimes the turkey sandwich is replaced by dinner leftovers (spaghetti or chili or soup).  She eats stuff cold but they'll heat it up for her if she wants.  Sometimes I throw another fruit in there like a banana in case she decides to eat part of her lunch when she arrives at school.

  • L eats all sorts of things for lunch. Sometimes she has a Beech Nut or Gerber soup for toddlers and a slice of cheese, a piece of lunch meat (turkey or ham) with veggies and cheese or yogurt, leftover spaghetti & a veggie, leftover chicken breast and a veggie and fruit, Gerber pasta pick-ups. I aim to include at least three food groups in her typical meals.
