Underwire Bra?

Do you wear underwire bra? I am a large chested and I thought I read somewhere that I should not wear underwire but my boobs need more support then from non underwire bras. Have any of you heard if we should or shouldn't wear underwire and what it does to our supply if we do. TIA

Re: Underwire Bra?

  • I do, but I'm small chested.  It's sometimes a PIA to nurse, but I was sick of the seamless one buckling at the sides.  As long as the wires don't poke into your breasts I think you should be ok.

  • I wore underwire nursing bras pretty much every day.  the only reason I am not wearing them anymore is that we are weaning so I am not pumping during the day and am back to my normal underwire bras (hallelujah!).

According to LCs I talked to at my hospital, underwire nursing bras are fine as long as you follow two rules.  1.  Don't sleep in them.  Get a non-wire bra for sleeping.  2.  Make sure they fit properly.  The wires should not sit on your breast tissue.  They should sit under your breasts (in the front) and behind them on your ribs (on the side).

I found getting professionally sized helped.  I wore the bravado body silk until DD was about 4 wks old and then went and got sized.  I had to get re-sized again a few months ago because I had lost more weight and my band size went down.  I went to Nordstrom.  Their instore selection isn't great but they are good at measuring you so I went in and got measured, figured out what size I was in each brand and then ordered some more online.  Bravado is the brand I like best.  Good luck.

  • Bride2b79 had the exact same experience I did... I bought a Bravado bra 10 days pp, then lost 15 pounds and my supply established even better...

I got sized at Nordstrom (I also had a good idea what size I needed based on taking my own measurements; they confirmed it.)

I bought an Elomi bra from a local breastfeeding store, and may order another one online. LOVE the Elomi, it fits very well. The key with un derwire is finding one that really fits you properly. The underwire on the sides should be under your arms, not on the breast tissue at all (if I weren't nursing I'd be more flexible about it.)

Anyway, I wear a 34H or I, depending on the bra, so the Bravado underwire bras don't fit me. Elomi's smallest band is 34, they specialize in larger cup sizes.
