Kids' Birthday in January

I really wish I could have my son's birthday party at home. I have a great backyard and would have a jumpy castle or two out there....but it can get cold during the day in January. If you were invited to a party at someone's house in January, would you be irritated or would you just bundle your kiddo up for the outdoor festivities?

  • I would be happy to bundle them up and let them play outdoors.  Plus - you can serve hot chocolate.  Yum.

  • I would just bundle her up. I want to do the same thing but it has rained every weekend for the past 3 years on her birthday weekend (April)! The kiddos can't exactly play out back when it's raining. :(

  • I'd totally do it!  You could do wintery treats like hot chocolate/hot apple cider/coffee, and rent a snow machine!

  • I had G's birthday party at home last year, and we're having his party at home again this year.

Last year we all jeans and short sleeve shirts on because the weather was so nice. But then again I come from a land where the avg temp in January is like 15, so 60 seems pretty darn nice =)

  • I would just bundle them up and go.  My kids love to play outside no matter what the weather is like!

  • It all depends on the temp.  Texas is so unpredictable and so if it's around 50's or so, then I wouldn't mind them playing.  But if it's FREEZING cold, then I would like the option of being able to sit inside the house too.  I have the same issue with Ally's bday party in mid Dec.  And so I bought a whole bunch of activity for indoors just in case it's raining and cold outside.

  • I say go for it!  It might be cold but then again it might also be 80 degrees.

We went to a party last January that was in the backyard and it was 60-70 degrees outside (first week in Jan) and the kids were all in short sleeves and getting hot running around.

  • We've had both of E's birthday parties (January 3rd) in the backyard and plan to do it again for birthday #3.  We've lucked out both years and had beautiful weather! However, if it ends up being cold, I love the idea of serving hot chocolate and other cold-weather treats.

Exactly. Back east, kids play outside when it's 20 degrees and wet.

Tru's bday is in January and even though we only had one party at home, we've had beautiful sunny days 2 out of 3 birthdays.

  • Not that C can get out and play now, but I would bundle him up.  Plan it for the warmest time of the day like 3-4pm and go for it.  As long as it's not wet and cold, you'll be fine.  We're doing C's party at the house in December.  Who knows what the weather will be like, but I'm going to risk it.
  • I wouldn't be irritated at all. I'd prefer to be at an outdoor party in January than July or August. You can always bundle the kids up but you can't do much when it's 110 degrees outside. And I love the hot chocolate idea. Go for it!

  • My first is a January baby. We have had every party for him at our home. The weather is just too unpredictable to plan only for outside, imo.

If you have a wonderful back yard, can you plan a party that can go either indoors or out depending on the temperature/rain? (It is the rain I worry about more - it often rains in January.)

We have indoor parties in January. Yes, the kids run wild, but they seem to have fun.

We added a very non-scary clown last year which was a lot of fun.

Pushing back or removing furniture from a room gives a large area for play. I put away all but some select toys for the kids to play with. Then, I just let them play.

I rent kiddie chairs and table; it helps control the madness when it is time for cake.

We have snacks for grown-ups too. And, of course, coffee.

One idea I've had is to get a bunch of dress-up clothes for them next year. They'll be four and may have a good time being princesses and knights and such...we'll see.

Good luck! I love home parties.

This... our kids are 3 weeks apart in age. :-)

Birthday 1 - it was warm outside and I planned for outdoor fun.

Birthday 2 - planned for outdoor fun and it was freezing cold and rainy

Birthday 3 - planned for indoor only fun and it was so beautiful people wanted to be outside even though I hadn't planned on having them out there (so the patio furniture was dirty, landscaping wasn't up to par, the crazy dog was jumping all over the kids until DH put her in the garage).

This birthday, I'm planning for outside again.  Watch... it will rain just because I really want to do some outdoor stuff.
