Hi everyone! I am 8 weeks pregnant and am due on May 22nd. I want everyones opinion because Im alittle concerned about the ultrasound. Like i said I am 8 weeks pregnant and my OB said that they are not going to do an ultrasound (1st one) until 20 weeks. I will get on I think at 16 weeks to check for downs since I am 38 yrs old. Is this normal? Shouldn't they do an initial US when you test positive to determine gestational age? Many women I have talked with said that they have already had one....I am the only one that has not. WORRIED...HELP?
Re: 1st ultrasound
It really depends on the OB. Mine didn't do early u/s unless there was a need to date the pregnancy - I knew my cycle length, and because I was charting, I knew our likely conception date, so there was no reason for us to question the EDD. Some women who have long/irregular cycles will require an early u/s to determine EDD... that sort of thing.
I had my first u/s at 12w2d, when we did the NT scan (which is used to determine the odds of chromosomal abnormalities, including the risk of Down's, Trisomy 18, etc.). This was purely optional for us because of my age (I was 24 at the time), but our insurance covered it, so we went for it for our own peace of mind. If we hadn't done that, we wouldn't have had an u/s until our anatomy scan at ~20w, and that was the only one that was mandatory by my OB's standards. We also paid OOP for a 3d/4d u/s at 29w because we wanted to, but again - our own choice, and that one we paid for.
I feel like, on the bump boards, a lot of women do have very early u/s... I'm not so sure that it's so much the norm, as just a lot of women in their first tri discussing early u/s. I wouldn't stress about it if I were you - just enjoy your pregnancy!
... every single day of forever.
