TTC After a Loss

9 day luteal phase ?

So it seems I had a 9 day luteal phase - does this mean if I were to get pregnant -a miscarriage is definitely a sure thing (google seems to think so)? I just started charting after my miscarriage but am wondering if anyone knows of any success stories of healthy pregnancies with short luteal phases? Thanks in advance - google has me all kinds of freaked out.

Re: 9 day luteal phase ?

  • I'm no expert but I think anything below 10 is cause for worry.  It may be that your body is still wonky after your loss, so it may take a few cycles to get back into the swing of things.  I know there are drugs (both prescription and not) which can help with your LP.  And, google can scare you a lot.  I try not to use it too often.  GL!

  • I think I would be concerned about a 9 day LP, but it is still pretty soon after your m/c.  I might watch it for another month or 2 before you freak out too much.  GL.

  • I don't think I've ever read that a short LP guarantees m/c, but more that it can make it more difficult to conceive.  (Somebody correct me if I'm way off base here.)

Over the 3 years I've been charting, my LP varied around 10-12 days, but was only 9 the first cycle after m/c.  Theoretically, your LP should always be the same, regardless of m/c or not, but let's be honest, nothing really works theoretically after m/c.

I'd give it another cycle or two and then maybe ask your OB or MW about it.  There are some things you can do to make it a little longer, but I wouldn't try them without first having a conversation with your doc.

Hope that helps and hope that LP gets a little longer next time!

  • My first cycle after my miscarriage had a shorter than usual luteal phase. I'd wait and see what your next few cycles are like before I'd get too worried (easier said than done, I know). But I would flag it with your doctor the next time you see him/her just to get their opinion.

Hope your next cycle evens out for you.

  • I would keep an eye on it for sure.  If you're concerned, I would talk to your doctor.  It's a very easy test to determine if there's a problem- a progesterone test 7 DPO.  I had one a few years ago because I was concerned with my 10 day luteal phase.
  • I would chart a few more cycles before you worry about it.  It can take several cycles for some women to get back to a normal cycle.  If you do end up having a short LP, there are things you can do about it pre-pregnancy.  GL.

  • I think the other ladies have given good advice.  I also had a short luteal phase the first full cycle after m/c, sounds like it's pretty common.

  • I talk to your doctor, but 9 is (as others said) below normal. That said, the cycle before we got our first BFP, my LP was 9 days. My mc was late and definitely had nothing to do with my LP. I'm taking Vitex to try and extend my LP this cycle and will probably also get my progesterone tested at 7DPO.

  • Like PPs said, it could be that your body is still adjusting. If you continue to have 9 day LPs, you should definitely see your doctor.
