Hawaii Babies

Did you do the NT scan?

My NT scan is scheduled for next Friday, and I'm irrationally nervous. If you had one, would you share your experience?

Re: Did you do the NT scan?

  • Yep, we did it. It was just like a regular ultrasound, only longer. Both of their neck folds measured well within the normal range so we didn't have to do any other tests after the scan.

If you're nervous about a bad result, someone (I can't remember who? Tara?) got a high-ish number, but everything turned out OK. Smile

Ah yes, I think you're right! I must be getting old...I think my memory is going lol. Stick out tongue

Ditto this.  I actually liked the ultrasound because it was really thorough, and we got to see the baby really well.  Henry's fold was just fine, and I'm glad we did it because it put my mind at ease.

This is why we did it.

I know that some people don't to the scan since it wouldn't make a difference either way (they wouldn't terminate a pregnancy if Downs Syndrome was likely), but I fell into the camp of wanting to not have to worry about it...or, if the tests came back and it was very likely that one or both boys had DS, we could educate ourselves and be more prepared to meet their needs in the future.

  • Glad to hear it wasn't a terrible experience for most of you. I would definitely rather know if we have challenges ahead. I'm a planner.
  • yep, we did. our insurance covers it so why not. it's just a regular ultrasound except you have to keep your bladder full. BUT, make sure it's not TOO full lol. I made the mistake of drinking tons and I was close to peeing while the ultrasound was being done lol. it was a good excuse to see LO too :-). i think this was the first u/s where your LO looks like a baby instead of just a blob :-).
  • Yes, it was just an ultrasound and bloodwork. The ultrasound was the best!

This!  I was lucky enough to have a scan done at each of my appointments (pretty much every month), and it was always so fun to see LO for longer periods of time during the NT scans.

  • no we did not.  we opted to just wait for the anatomy scan aka gender scan since we had to pay OOP for it

this.  we definitely wanted to know, either way.  (and it was covered by insurance)  just an ultrasound and some bloodwork - no worries!

  • yes it was me who had a really bad experience. Fold showed just a little high, blood test came back 1 in 30 chance for Downs, really high in my book. LO turned out just fine. If you are one of the many who the results don't matter to then I would suggest not getting it just for an extra ultrasound. While all the other girls on this board have had good results, I went to a board full of women who wished more than anything they didn't do it because they continued their pregnancies but with the added stress of no knowing if their kid had DS or not (most chose not to do an amnio).

    Good luck

  • I had mine a few week ago and I'm glad I did!  It was just a super long ultrasound and some bloodwork at the end, very easy and fun.  It was great to see LO bouncing around all over the place since the last time I saw it, it looked liked a blob.  It's not evasive at all and it helped put my mind at ease knowing everything was ok :)

    This.

  • We opted to do it for several reasons. We did it with Bella because our dr made it sound like we needed to. She made it seem like it wasn't really an option and insurance covered it so I being a first time mom, never questioned it. everything came back perfect and we were good to go. However, at our 20 week ultrasound is when we found out that she didn't have a left hand. They COULD have seen it at the NT scan if they had looked close enough at her fingers/toes but they didn't. It's not something they look for at the NT scan. They are more focused on the nuchal fold (to help determine if the LO has DS) and the spinal cord (for spina bifida).

This time we opted to do it for several reasons. My BIL has twins and one of them has a heart defect (reason #1), with Bella's hand I wanted to see if they could tell if this LO had all limbs/digits (reason #2), I wanted to be able to pick my child's own drs (I'm a peds nurse) should anything be abnormal and it would also change where I deliver (reason #3), I wanted to be prepared because having one child is busy and having two would be even busier so I wanted to know and prepare myself if something was abnormal so I could change my FTE if I needed to (reason #4) and lately my insurance covered all but $11. Everything checked out with this LO good, heart is all great, all fingers and toes so we're in the green so far.

At the anatomy scan, they'll take a deeper look and I'll also be getting an extra growth u/s later in the pregnancy.

  • nope.  I'm sure my insurance covers it b/c co-workers (some younger than me) have done it but it's not something we were interested in.
  • We did the bloodwork, but the scan was never offered to us.  I'm sure if our bloodwork came back with questionable results, our doctor would have discussed the scan with us.
