So I have a yeast infection in my boobs and they put me on diflucan for 2 weeks. I took him in today and he has thrush, so they put him on an oral, topical liquid 4X/day for 5 days (don't remember what it's called). The nurse who saw us said to drop it shallowly into his mouth so he doesn't swallow it right away, so it is able to coat his mouth. She also said to soak all bottle nipples in 50/50 vinegar water.
?
We called back to get clarification about the nipple soaking and talked to a different nurse. SHE said to not drop the meds in his mouth; we should use a washcloth or q-tip to swab the meds directly on infected areas. The white stuff is on the back of his tongue and I can't imagine he'll let me get to it easily.
?
So...anyone have experience with thrush? How did you treat it? What about keeping things clean? I EP, so I'm dealing with not only bottle parts, but flanges too. Did you soak everything in vinegar water? And can't I just use my medela steam sterilizing bags instead? I know I'm sounding frantic, but it is my understanding that this can be hard to get rid of and I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to help get us both cleared up. Thanks.?
Re: DS has thrush and confused about treatment
We just finally got rid of the thrush last week. DS took Nystatin. It is ok to swallow, fill up the disperser thingie, tilt his head to one side, pour half in, repeat on the other. If he spilts it out that is fine and if he swallows that is fine to. (It may change the color of his poop for a couple days) DS was on the Nystatin for about 2 weeks 3-4 times a day. It is also an anti-fungal not an antibiotic.
I also EP, I got one set of new pump parts and run everything through the medela steam bags/sterilizer once every 2 days. If you can do it more often try to do so. We also started using drop ins more during this period so I had less washing to do.
