Dairy free - what do you eat on a daily basis?

We are trying to figure out if DD has a milk allergy. Her pedi has her trying soy formula now, but after doing some reading I don't think it is the best option. I really, really want to BF again.

So, if you are on a dairy free diet, what do you eat in a normal day? I'm not sure I can do it, so am looking for some ideas and real life meal plans. I already know that I have to cut out some other things that make DD gassy and cause her issues/pain from reflux - tomatoes, broccoli, most green veggies, onions/garlic, pepperoni, tomato sauce, and her pedi said to stay away from peanut butter. I'm not a big meat eater so I eat a lot of cheese, especially for lunches. I don't know how I'd replace that.

  • Can you eat soy? You can always have things like soy milk, soy pudding, yogurt, tofu, etc...There are some really good things made out of coconut and almond milk (Coconut Bliss, So Delicious, Zen Soy). I was a huge cheese eater and I started buying this stuff called Daiya. It comes in cheddar and mozzarella flavor, but only in shreds. Its pretty decent and melts. If its IN a recipe you can't really tell. It also makes a decent grilled cheese sandwich. I am a vegetarian and ate a lot of soy but I can't eat it now, DOH!, so I eat a lot of nuts, especially sprinkled on veggie stir-fry, quinoa is a grain that has a lot of protein in it, eggs, seafood, beans...black beans and rice are good and cheap, just use the recipe off the Goya brand bag, cook some plantains on the side. Yum! White bean hummus with rosemary and crackers or bread...Also, check out this blog, vegandad.blogspot.com, lots of fun recipes. GL!

  • Be careful with soy in your diet. A of LO with dairy allergies end up with soy allergies as well.

That being said, I eat a lot poultry, rice and veggies. For snacks, I eat crackers, pretzels, hummas, and cereal bars, along with fresh fruits and veggies. If you do a google search, you can find a lot of food and recipe ideas that are dairy free. 1ht, HTH.

  • Thanks! What worries me is that anything that seems to make me gassy makes her react badly - so no tofu, beans, green veggies. I do love tofu, too!! I don't eat seafood, unfortunately, although I try to force myself to! I'll have to do some more research.
