Headaches at 14 wks

On Friday, I started getting a headache that then lasted the duration of the weekend. At one point it hurt so bad that I just had to take a nap. It isn't as strong today, but still comes back when I stand up too quickly. Is anyone else having this problem? I am trying to figure out if it is just hormones going crazy or if I should call my dr. Thoughts?

Re: Headaches at 14 wks

  • I just started getting headaches and I NEVER get headaches. I've been blaming them on seasonal allergies..but maybe I should shift the blame to pregnancy.  How long until your next appointment? If it isn't long you could wait until then, or give them a call to ease your mind

  • I had that too. Did they give you a list of meds you can take? Normally Tylenol is good. I took one regular strength Tylenol and it helped. Also, one day I just drank a ton of water instead of the Tylenol and that really helped.

  • Call your Dr. Especially if its lasting for days, even if it is just your hormones going crazy you shouldn't have to suffer. When I called my doctor they had me check for triggers such as caffeine, low blood sugar (i.e. too long between meals) and dehydration and to make sure I had tried regular tylenol. When I could verify that it was none of those, and tylenol had no effect, they wrote me a Rx for a stronger version of tylenol.

  • I can commiserate. Sometimes my headache will be milk and only last a day, other times it's pretty bad, and I've had a couple that lasted more than one day. I had headaches coming off birth control too so I know it's hormonal. Ugh.
  • my doc told me to take Tylenol as soon as I felt a headache coming on. She explained that there's no need to try and tough it out (which is what I was trying to do) because it will just get worse. Most likely it's due to all the hormone changes...that hit me more in week 13 & 14. Sorry for your pain!
  • I've started getting them too.  I've been taking xtra strength Tylenol and it seems to help, but the headaches still last several days.  I know I need to drink more water, maybe that would help too.
  • I had horrible headaches @ 14 weeks. Most likely they are pregnancy related - the hormone levels are dropping, which can cause headaches.

I tried to snack all day, drink lots of water, and took Tylenol. Mine lasted about 3-4 days and then went away. If it is unbearable, talk to your dr and see what they say. Better safe than sorry.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

  • I've been suffering from headaches.  From the more people I talk to, the more I'm finding out this is a common 2nd tri thing. It definitely has to do with hormone adjustments.

I find that caffine helps me if Tylenol doesn't.  Also naps and baths help too.

I plan on mentioning it to my Dr at my appt tomorrow, but I don't think it needed to be addressed before then.

  • Yep, starting around 13.5 weeks I started getting a headache every single day at 2 pm. The book from my Dr's office says headaches at the start of second trimester are normal. However, it also says headaches lasting 24 hours that don't resolve with tylenol, you should call the office. That is a long time to have a headache!

  • Yep! I've actually been having them throughout, but they seem to be happening more frequently now that I've hit the second tri. The current one's been pretty low-grade, but happening for a few days. I've been flying alot thought the last two weeks, so that might have something to do with it. My Dr. thought it was caffeine-related, and told me to have a real cup of coffee every now and then. I have a half-calf cup like once or twice a week, but I don't think that's it. Tylenol helps, but I try to tough it out if it's not too bad.

  • I started getting them around 13 wks. I've read that they can be caused by HCG levels dropping, which happens at the end of the 1st tri b/c the placenta takes over.
