3rd Trimester

If you failed GD test #1

Did you fail #2 as well?  I've heard through the "when so and so was pregnant" grape vine that it's common to fail the first test and pass the second.

I'm trying to be really really good with my diet since I found out the bad news last week.  But I'm wondering if it's just wishful thinking that suddenly not eating ice cream will mean I will pass my second test Thursday.

Re: If you failed GD test #1

  • I failed the first test and I planned my 2nd for a week later (it made me feel better having some time, ha).  I ate way better that week.  NO white starches, no sugar.  It was HELL.  All I want is pasta and bread and chocolate this pregnancy.

But I did pass the 3 hour test.  I heard it doesn't really help to be 'good' before the test because you have to drink that sugar drink anyway, but it was worth trying for me.

The hard part was not eating before and during the 3 hour and drinking that sugary drink.  And don't throw up, I almost did and they said I'd have to start all over if we did!  ughhh

  • I failed both - I have GD. But yes many women fail the 1 hr test and pass the 3 hr.  And, yes it is wishful thinking to think that if you eat better from now til your test it will change your outcome. If you have GD, you have it - and it's better to know so that you can manage it.

  • I've had GD both preg- so I failed both times. :) Eating better will not matter- you're fasting anyways and it measures how your body reacts to the sugar drink- nothing you can do!

  • I failed the first one pretty bad and passed the second one...my levels were actually really low on the 2nd test and they said I was hypoglycemic.  I did not change my diet at all for the second test.

From my understanding the first "test" is more of a screening.  It is not very accurate in general but if you have GD it is caught in the screening and then confirmed with the second test.  They primarly do it to prevent everybody from having to take the 3 hour test.  Most people that fail the 1 hour go on to pass the 3 hour.  I wouldn't change your diet (unless the doctor said to)...just fast as directed.

That's what I thought.  Oh well, I guess eating better can't hurt anything especially if I do end up having GD.  I might as well get used to it now I guess.

    Thanks ladies! :)

Edit: I haven't changed anything about my diet drastically, I've just cut out any unnecessary refined sugar and opted for wheat instead of white kind of thing.

  • Failed the 1 hr miserably (164), but passed the 3 hr without a problem.

  • I failed 1hr and passed the 3hr the next day. I didn't change ANYTHING about the way I eat, and I am a major sugar addict. It actually turned out that I have low blood sugar, and the doctor told me to make sure that I always have snacks with me :)    The worst part about the 3hr is the fasting before hand. Ugh! I was starving!
  • I failed them both.  I had to do a special carbo-load diet for 3 days prior to taking the 3 hour test.

  • I failed the one hour and passed the 3 hour, about 3 days later. I started eating healthy again in between results just to try to get myself used to it.

  • I failed the 1 hour test (on my 3rd time taking it) and passed the 3 hour test.  I didn't change anything about the way I was eating.
  • I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour.  My OB said something like 85% of women who fail the 1 hour will pass the 3 hour.  GL!

  • With DD, I failed the 1 hour with around a 180.  I passed the 3 hour, but I don't know what the numbers were.  I was scared that I was definitely going to fail because my number on the 1 hour was so high, but that didn't happen.  It is very possible to fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour.  Good luck to you!

That number makes me feel a little better!  I have my fingers crossed for Thursday.
