3rd Trimester

S/O leaving LO for the first time

Yesterday DH, DS and I were taking a walk around our block and met some new neighbors.  They had a one year old so we were talking about pregnancy and all that.  They went to the local university here but are originally from Taiwan.  She asked me if I will leave the house before 30 days, at first I thought she meant, will I leave the baby before 30 days, but then she told me in Taiwan, the new mom is not allowed to leave the house for 30 days after the birth.  She said it was a culture thing and her mom was visiting to help and wouldn't let her leave the house.

I think I would go stir crazy mad if I couldn't leave the house for a whole month after birth!

Re: S/O leaving LO for the first time

  • I have heard of that before.  i would go stir crazy.

I went out about 7 days PP to dinner with DH.

I am sure I will do the same this time.

first time I left my son was 30 days old, we went to a wedding and my parents watched him for 5 hours.  Over night, the first time was 11 weeks.  we went to a wedding in NY.  My parents had him over night.

  • In Mexico it's like 40 days or something where you aren't allowed to do ANYTHING but feed the baby and rest.  I am not sure about the whole leaving the house thing though.  That's crazy.  My mom came for 40 days after my DS was born and will be here when this LO is born.  She ends up cooking, cleaning, taking care of DS and DH.   She is great.  She lets me sleep during the day if the baby is fussy and takes care of everything.

  • My parents came out when we had our son and they didn't want me going out for the first two weeks- I understand why now, but at the time I thought they were making me crazy.  The reality is your body is still healing and it is very hard to get out and about without it really leaving you in pain.  Our first was born when Britney's first was and they claimed she was working out as soon as she got home- I call BS!

  • i'd go crazy.

i made a wal mart run @ 4 days pp because i NEEDED to get out.

  • IDK if its the same thing, but I've been told by many of the elders in my family that the baby and I aren't to leave the house until the baby is baptized (for any other reason than to go to the baptism, of course).

AND that I should have the baby baptized within 4 weeks of his birth. I don't think I'm going to adhere to these policies!! hahaha!

  • Yeah, I couldn't handle that.  No way.  And what about taking the baby to the doctor and stuff?

  • The first week I stayed in - not because I didnt think I should go out, I just couldnt.  I don't heal well from any kind of surgery or trauma (I didnt have a c/s or bad tear but my body heals slowly from anything) and I prefered to stay on my couch.  As soon as I felt up to it I was out of the house - Target, BRU, the mall, anywhere just to get out of the house for a few hours.  It really saved my sanity, I couldnt stay in the house all day every day, just the short walk around the store renewed my energy :)

  • Hmm, the baptism itself (of our baby) is within a month of birth. What about the doctor appointments? Or are those different in other countries than in the US?

  • Wow, I couldn't do that!
  • Um, yeah, that will so not be happening in my household. I would probably lose my mind if I couldn't leave the house for 30 days.

The pediatrician said we should avoid taking the baby out as much as possible the first two weeks (walks for fresh air are ok, but avoiding places with people like the store) and avoid highly crowded places (like the mall or Disney World) for about four to six weeks. I figure DH and I will alternate doing errands the first two weeks and after the first month, we plan to be as active as possible (assuming the baby travels ok and isn't colicky).
