Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Any other EBF babies HATE the paci?

I know I should be thankful that DS will not take any kind of pacifier (I've tried 6 different kinds; he loved the soothie until 3 months) because I won't have to worry about taking it away one day, but there are times that I wish he would take one; like when he wakes up an hour after he goes to bed at night and nothing with calm/settle him except the boob.

For those whose LO hates pacifiers, do you have any soothing tips that don't involve CIO?  Back rubbing, humming, rocking, and the seahorse do not work.

  • DS has never taken a pacifier, but he loves his thumb.  I know we may have to battle him about it one day, but for now, we're just thankful that he has something to make himself happy with.  This morning I found him wide awake in his crib, but he hadn't made a peep...just nom, nom, nom-ing away on that thumb!

  • Not an EBF, but my son never has taken a paci. He's a great sleeper though, STTN 7 weeks.. 12 hours.. so not sure about advice on that..

I know what you mean about wanting LO to take a paci sometimes, and other times enjoying the ffact that you never have to take it away...

  • I wouldn't say that DS hates the paci, he just doesn't care for it. He used to use the soothie, but it never became a thing for him. If we can't soothe him by other means (seahorse, rocking, etc) we turn on the radio and dance with him. That seems to be our sure-fire way to calm him. GL!
  • I'm in the same boat. My DS hates the pacifier. He refuses it. Giving him a lovie has really helped. When he wakes up he can squeeze and hold the lovie and calm himself back to sleep.
  • Our LO hates the paci - occasionally I'll get him to suck on my knuckle but mostly he's into his hand. We've tried to give him a loveie but he's really into a burp pad from BRU - it's rough and for some reason he loves to rub his face all over it. As soon as he lies on it he's calm. What a weird baby. :P

  • I have nothing, but I'm kinda glad to hear that I'm not the only one.

DH is starting to really hate the fact that he can't soothe her, and I feel for him.  And me!

I've given her the paci a few times recently and she does okay with it.  Sometimes she chews on it, but sometimes she sucks.  It doesn't seem to make her as angry as it did 2 months ago...she used to suck and then spit it out with a look of disgust on her face.

  • When DS was about 3 1/2 months, he refused the paci, until I figured out I needed to buy the next size up! I guess he needed the larger nipple than the newborn (0-3 month) provided.  He takes the paci, but is currently using it as a teether/chew toy!  He has many teething toys, but the paci is his favorite!
